Caught My Eye…

Some people create their own storms, then get upset when it rains. – Unknown

Welcome to “Caught My Eye” (CME)! CME is coming to you, coronavirus free, from deep inside an underground bunker in Montana. The bunker also serves as the worldwide headquarters for The Western Word blog!

CME is the once a week column that is posted here every Friday morning. This is when I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week. There may be some sarcasm and pointed independent commentary so be warned!

Here are the topics that “Caught My Eye” this week:

  • Ballot Interference Prevention Act
  • Trump taps Pence
  • Super Tuesday
  • One More Thing

BALLOT INTERFERENCE PREVENTION ACT:

The Associated Press (AP) is reporting that election administrators from three Montana counties told lawmakers Thursday that a voter-passed referendum that limits who can drop off a person’s absentee ballot is frustrating electors, suppressing votes and it easily bypassed.

I have always thought that the Act was total BS. (That’s bullshit for my readers from Iowa). Although it passed with 63% of the vote, there are probably a good amount of people who did not research the Act to see what it would actually do. The supporters’ cried wolf and the 63% who supported it believed what the big bad wolf was telling them.

The same 63% would probably place a bid for oceanfront property near Geyser, Montana if they saw an ad.

I’d like to see another vote on this. I think it would be overturned. The government is supposed to make voting easier, not harder.

TRUMP TAPS PENCE:

President Donald Trump’s announcement Wednesday that his vice president will lead the administration’s response to the coronavirus put the spotlight on Mike Pence’s handling of a major health crisis when he was Indiana’s governor. Critics have faulted Pence for what they call his slow and inadequate response to the nation’s first HIV outbreak linked to the injection of oral painkillers in 2015. (USA Today)

I’m not a big fan of Mike Pence. If he is so honorable, how can he stand by and not respond to Trump’s attacks and lies? He has lost his moral compass.

Some people have said something like, “What will Pence do about the coronavirus, pray?”

I hope Pence prays. I also hope he allows scientists to do their jobs.

Maybe Pence can convince the MAGA people that the coronavirus is real and not a concerted effort to make Trump look bad heading into the November election.

SUPER TUESDAY:

This Saturday is the South Carolina primary. Then on Tuesday, March 3, we have “Super Tuesday” which should thin out the Democratic Presidential field, significantly. Maybe.

The “Super Tuesday” states are Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, and Virginia. American Samoa has a Democratic caucus. (NY Times)

In case you were wondering, Montana’s primary is June 2.

ONE MORE THING:

I always check Twitter each morning to what’s trending. This morning a name caught my eye: Barry Sanders. Sanders is a Hall of Fame running back who played for the Detroit Lions. He also played college football for Oklahoma State University.

Country music star Garth Brooks was playing a show in Detroit and came out on stage wearing a Barry Sanders jersey. He also posted a photo of him wearing the jersey on Instagram. Brooks also attended Oklahoma State in the 1980s like Sanders.

Barry Sanders wore the #20 jersey for the Lions. When Brooks appeared on stage wearing Sanders #20 jersey, Trump supporters went crazy thinking he was supporting Bernie Sanders in 2020. (Detroit Free Press)

This is just another example of Trump’s MAGA crowd not being too bright…

Have a great weekend!

  1. Concerning the MAGA crowd I am amazed they continue to be fine with what the Trump Administration continues to do to education in this country. Betsy DeVos head of Department of Education has cut 5.4 million from rural schools grant programs costing Montana $400,000. Six schools lose all their after school funding including Polson, which just voted down a school levy in December. I was so enlightened to hear Montana Department of Public Education is “definitely concerned” about this. That is kind of like Senator Susan Collins always being definitely concerned by President Trumps behavior and lessons learned. I certainly don’t hear Senator Daines raising hell about this as Senator Tester is. Guess that doesn’t fit into the MAGA plan, or is the plan to dumb down the nation more.

    • Dennis – it is shameful what Trump did to schools. Public schools are suffering under his administration. Thanks, JmB

  2. CPAC is a gun-free zone, soooo
