If you are a first-time visitor, welcome! Caught My Eye (CME) is the once a week column that is posted here every Friday morning. This is when I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week. There may be some sarcasm and pointed independent commentary so be warned!
Here are the topics that “Caught My Eye” this week:
- Impeachment Trial
- Souvenir Pens
- AFC/NFC Poll Results
- One More Thing
IMPEACHMENT TRIAL:
Like it or not, Thursday was kind of a historic day in Washington, D.C. with the Impeachment Trial of President Donald John Trump getting underway.
The trial should be required viewing by all middle and high school students.
Chief Justice of the United States John Roberts will preside over the trial. He was sworn in by U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa). Grassley is the President pro tempore of the United States Senate. In turn, Roberts administered the oath to the senators. The senators then lined up to sign the oath book.
To read more about the “oath book” click HERE.
One of the more interesting things to come out of the first day was that Roberts has a large bald spot. That may mean you’ll need to wear sunglasses to watch the trial.
Ironically, each senator used the same pen to sign the oath book, unlike what Speaker Nancy Pelosi did when she signed the articles of impeachment (see below).
I’m sure many germs were passed between the senators and the clerk during the signing of the oath book. Yuk.
I wonder if U.S. Senator Steve Daines (R-MT), who has already called the impeachment of Trump a sham felt guilty taking the oath and saying he would be impartial. God is watching you, Steve.
In Washington, D.C. fashion, the trial’s opening arguments are set to begin Tuesday afternoon.
SOUVENIR PENS:
Apparently Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi used 30 different customized ink pens to sign the impeachment articles against President Donald J. Trump.
Then she handed each signing pen to the assembled chairmen and House managers who will prosecute the case in the Senate. (AP)
Some on the right are pissed that she used the impeachment articles in a ceremony and handed out ink pens with her name engraved on them.
Sure it is kind of like spiking the ball in the Republican’s face, but I am sure if the tables were turned, the Democrats would be pissed at the Republicans for doing the same.
The Associated Press gives a history of signing pens in an article HERE.
AFC/NFC POLL RESULTS:
I asked readers earlier this week to tell me who they thought would win the AFC and NFC championships on Sunday. Here are the results from the two polls:
AFC Championship:
- Kansas City Chiefs – 83%
- Tennessee Titans – 17%
NFC Championship:
- San Francisco 49ers – 87%
- Green Bay Packers – 13%
Thanks to all who participated. Go Chiefs!!
ONE MORE THING:
Monday is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. One of my favorite quotes from Dr. King is this one:
Faith is taking the first step even when you can’t see the whole staircase.
Have a great weekend!
You can leave the sound off as you watch Gutfeld throw his histrionic shitfit and then watch as Trump took pens out of the box by the handful to be passed around at the China trade bill signing. I wonder if the guy from Great Falls got one, if he was there.
I saw a close-up of one of the trays on Nancy’s desk, there were 8 pens in it. The other tray appeared to hold the same number.
