Tuesday’s Quick Hits

The fact that humanity has to clarify that any lives matter should be concern enough. – Unknown

Today’s quick hits deal with these important subjects:

  • Infanticide Bill
  • Donald Trump & Kim Jong Un
  • Men-Only Military Draft Unconstitutional

Infanticide Bill:

The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act (S. 311), sponsored by U.S. Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE), met its death in the U.S. Senate on Monday. The vote to proceed to the bill, requiring 60 votes to pass, failed 53-44.

Everyone knew the bill was going to fail before they even held the vote. The vote was held to help Republicans in 2020 elections.

As for Montana’s senators, U.S. Senator Jon Tester (D) voted Nay and U.S. Senator Steve Daines (R) voted Yea.

If you check the statements from several Republican senators they all blame the “Senate Democrats” for voting to kill babies that were born alive. Some even used the term “infanticide” to add a little fuel to their argument, like the headline of the press release from Daines:

Daines Condemns Senate Democrats for Blocking Bill to Stop Infanticide

Daines, in recent weeks, has hitched his 2020 campaign to the pro-life crowd.

By the way, I did a check and could not find the term “infanticide” in the text of the bill.

I think everyone wants to see fewer abortions in the world. The big issue for some is who should get to make that decision.

You can read more about the bill HERE.

Donald Trump & Kim Jong Un:

North Korea leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump are in Vietnam for face-to-face meetings this week. They are meeting in Hanoi.

Trump made it to Vietnam this time – no complaints about bone spurs.

I hope they accomplish many things during this, their second meeting. I hope they have more meetings.

In my opinion, having face to face meetings with Kim Jong Un may be the best thing Donald Trump has accomplished in his time as President of the United States.

Trump said recently, “If I were not elected president, you would have been in a war with North Korea.” I’m not sure about that, but the fact is we have not had one and nobody has been nuked. These are good things. He gets points for that.

Trump now needs to push the denuclearization of North Korea across the finish line – if he can. If I were Kim Jong Un the last thing I would do is give up my nukes – they have enabled him to have two meetings with the leader of the most powerful country in the world. He’s now considered by many to be on equal footing in the nuke world.

The pot will have to be very sweet for him to do away with his nukes.

I think the most important thing is to keep both sides talking and meeting. It’s harder to go to war with someone you have looked in the eyes.

The Associated Press has a good report about the expectations of the summit in a story you can read HERE.

Men-Only Military Draft Unconstitutional:

A federal judge has ruled that a men-only draft is unconstitutional, but he stopped short of ordering the Selective Service System to register women for military service. (Stars and Stripes)

He should have gone all the way. This is 2019.

I never registered through the Selective Service system because they ended it two years before I became 18 years old. A few years after that I enlisted in the U.S. Air Force voluntarily – it was the best job I ever had.

    • Yes, but we need a list of people to choose from, so registering everyone would be best, I think. -JmB
