Caught My Eye…

Never let success get to your head; never let failure get to your heart. – Unknown

Welcome to the big show to end the week “Caught My Eye” (CME)!

If you are a first-time visitor, CME is posted right here every Friday morning. This is when I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week. I often throw in a touch of sarcasm to make you smile – or to irritate you just a little – maybe both.

Topics that I am providing commentary about today include the Mollie Tibbetts murder, Ohio State Football and domestic violence, and One More Thing that you don’t want to miss!

Mollie Tibbetts:

Mollie Tibbetts is a 20-year-old University of Iowa student who went missing July 18. Her body was found in an Iowa cornfield on August 21. 24-year-old Cristhian Bahena Rivera has been charged with her murder.

There has been some confusion surrounding Rivera’s immigration status. Initially, some reports said he was an undocumented immigrant. Other reports say he was working legally in Iowa at a dairy farm.

USA Today reported that Rivera has lived in Iowa for four to seven years, working at Yarrabee Farms, a Brooklyn, Iowa-area farm owned by several family members, including brothers Eric, Dane and Craig Lang. Craig Lang, a prominent Iowa Republican, verified that Rivera is in Iowa legally, according to Richards’ motion.

Rivera’s immigration status was quickly picked up by the Republicans and used as a campaign talking point. President Donald Trump talked about it in a West Virginia rally this week and even released a video about it. The White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, had this to say in the Tuesday White House briefing:

Sadly, the individual believed to be responsible for the murder is an illegal immigrant, making this an unfortunate reminder of why we need to strengthen our immigration laws.

The fact is illegal immigrants, non-citizens, and legal immigrants are less likely to be incarcerated, convicted, or arrested for crimes than native-born Americans are. (CATO)

A post on Facebook kind of put it in perspective:

What happened to Mollie Tibbetts is horrible, but saying it happened because of undocumented immigrants is stupid.
A white man slaughtered his entire family in Colorado last week and no one is screaming, “ban white men from America.”

I am in favor of people coming to this country legally and those who do not must suffer some penalty before they can become citizens.

Tibbetts’ aunt recently told CNN, “I don’t want Mollie’s memory to get lost amongst politics.”

I think it already has – and that’s too bad for all of us.

Rest in peace, Mollie.

Ohio State Football:

Ohio State Football coach Urban Meyer was suspended for three games for his handling of domestic abuse allegations against former wide receivers coach Zach Smith.

The three-game suspension showed most of America that Ohio State officials put winning football games above about anything else – including domestic abuse allegations.

Urban Meyer should have been fired.

During the press conference when Meyer was given a chance to apologize to Zach Smith’s ex-wife, Courtney, Meyer fumbled the snap:

Well, I have a message for everyone involved in this. I’m sorry we’re in this situation. And, um … I’m just sorry we’re in this situation.

I bet he’s sorrier he is in this situation.

Ohio State still has a problem. College football still has a problem.
