Thursday Numbers

Falling down is an accident. Staying down is a choice. – Rosemary Nonny Knight

Welcome to “Thursday Numbers!” In case you’re a first-time visitor, this is the weekly column where I take a look at the numbers that are in the news (in descending order) and provide commentary sometimes sprinkled with sarcasm.

This week’s topics include unemployment, Duncan & Margaret Hunter, the midterm election, Jon Tester, The Western Word poll, a Fox News poll, Duncan Hunter’s indictment, the Big Bang Theory, Veterans Affairs Montana, Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer, and much more!

210,000

That’s how many people filed new claims for unemployment last week. (USDOL)

600

That’s how much ($600) U.S. Representative Duncan Hunter, a Republican from California, allegedly spent on airfare for the family’s pet rabbit. Hunter and his wife, Margaret, are charged with converting more than $250,000 in campaign funds to pay for personal expenses and filing false campaign finance records with the Federal Election Commission. (NY Times)

Dumb and Dumber look smarter than Duncan and Margaret Hunter…

75

That’s how many days there are until the midterm elections on November 6, 2018.

62

Happy birthday to U.S. Senator Jon Tester (D-Mont.) for turning 62 this week. He received a letter from President Trump that says, in part, “Melania and I send our best wishes for your year ahead.”

Maybe Tester can use that letter in a campaign commercial about bipartisanship…

59

A new Fox News Poll finds that approval of Special Counsel Robert Mueller stands at 59 percent, up 11 points since July, and 40 percent expect the investigation will find Trump committed criminal or impeachable offenses, up 5 points. (Fox News)

Wow…and that’s a Fox News poll…

58

In a recent poll here at The Western Word, I asked readers, “Do you agree with Gov. Steve Bullock’s comments on CNN about banning assault weapons/some forms of semiautomatic weapons?”

The results are:

Yes – 58%
No – 33%
Undecided – 9%

Thanks to all who participated!

Get ready to say wow!

12

The “Big Bang Theory” will end its run following the completion of the forthcoming 12th season, CBS announced Wednesday. (Yahoo)

It will be in syndication for perpetuity…

8

The Veterans Affairs Montana Health Care System has a temporary chief of staff for the eighth time in as many years. (AP)

The VA in each state is in their own little kingdom…

3

Ohio State suspended its national championship football coach Urban Meyer for three games after the school investigated his handling of allegations of domestic abuse involving one of his former assistant coaches. (USA Today)

He seems to have gotten off lucky…

  1. 1-the number of jurors who ‘hung’ the Manafort jury on 10 of 18 counts against Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort

Manafort goes on trial in D.C. soon. I don’t think Trump will pardon him.

    • Doug – I think that’s the million dollar question (pardon Manafort). -JmB

  2. Urban Meyer got off very lucky!
