I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an ass of yourself. ― Oscar Wilde
Hello June – you beautiful thing!
Welcome to the big show to end the week “Caught My Eye” (CME)!
If you are a first-time visitor, CME is posted right here every Friday morning. This is when I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week. I often throw in a touch of sarcasm to make you smile – or to irritate you just a little – maybe both.
Topics that I am providing commentary about today include Sheriff Bob Edwards, Montana Lottery & debit cards, Primary predictions, Samantha Bee, Free Blago, The Americans, and One More Thing!
Complaint filed against Sheriff Edwards:
Cascade County Sheriff Bob Edwards can’t buy good press. The Great Falls Tribune reported Thursday that Edwards was running attack ads against one of his opponents in the June 5 primary, Jesse Slaughter. The complaint contends the ads were not provided to the opposition before being distributed to social media and television broadcasts, which would be a violation of Montana’s campaign laws.
One would think a man with years in the political arena would know the laws. Or maybe a sheriff…
The Tribune also reported that the videos, which criticized Slaughter for inexperience, have since been taken off Edwards’ campaign Facebook page. The Commissioner of Political Practices will investigate and rule on the complaint in the near future.
I happened to see one air on KRTV around 6:30 p.m. last night (Thursday), so they were not removed from local TV. The ads are cheap. On the other hand, Slaughter’s ads are very well done and are not attacking anyone.
In case you forgot, Edwards is in the process of appealing a decision by a state law enforcement panel that revoked his law enforcement and coroner certificates following a June domestic disturbance at a Helena hotel.
So right now Cascade County has a sheriff who lacks law enforcement and coroner certificates.
Breaking news about the Montana Lottery…
I frequently play the Montana Lottery (don’t judge me, you hypocrite). When I attempted to pay for my tickets with a debit card the other day, the cashier said they could no longer accept debit cards – just cash or check.
So I contacted the officials at the Montana Lottery and received a quick response. The area in the Montana Code Annotated (Montana Law) that deals with the lottery (Montana Code Annotated 23-7-302 (3)) does not specifically mention “debit cards,” so some bright “state legal staff” decided they could not accept debit cards as payment any more.
Here is a professional observation – anytime you allow some government lawyer (aka “state legal staff”) to make decisions you’re going to screw over the taxpayer. The code talked about was first written in 1985 – long before debit cards became popular.
Debit cards are taking the place of checks, in case the legal folks forgot.
Montana seems to always be behind in technology.
Maybe some bright legislator will fix this little problem in the next session. Meanwhile, I imagine some people will stop buying lottery tickets and the revenue obtained from the ticket sales will drop a little – all because of some “state legal staff” opinion.
Tuesday Primary Predictions:
Here are a few of my predictions for the Tuesday Primary in Montana. This does not mean I will be voting for these people – just my expert opinion about who I think will win the primary:
- In the Democrat U.S. House At-large primary, I think John Heenan will win.
- In the Republican U.S. Senate primary, I think Matt Rosendale will win.
- In the Republican Public Service Commissioner #1 race, I think Rob Cook will win.
- In the Democrat Cascade County Sheriff’s race, I hope either Jesse Slaughter or George Kynett wins.

In the latest outrage, Samantha Bee had this to say on her TBS show “Full Frontal” about Ivanka Trump, daughter of President Trump:
“Let me just say, one mother to another, do something about your dad’s immigration practices you feckless c–t!” said Bee. “He listens to you. Put on something tight and low cut and tell your father to f–king stop it. Tell him it was an Obama thing and see how it goes.”
While almost everyone agrees that it’s not nice to call someone a “feckless c–t,” it’s not really a double standard as some on the right are trying to make it in regard to Roseanne calling a black woman an ape. That was racist. Bee’s comments were distasteful.
Bee apologized via Twitter:
I would like to sincerely apologize to Ivanka Trump and to my viewers for using an expletive on my show to describe her last night. It was inappropriate and inexcusable. I crossed a line, and I deeply regret it.
As for Bee’s future with TBS, who knows what will happen to her. It won’t make a bit of difference to me.
The Associated Press reported Thursday that President Donald Trump said Thursday he’s considering commuting the sentence of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was convicted of corruption, and pardoning lifestyle entrepreneur Martha Stewart, who served a stint in federal prison after being convicted of charges related to a stock sale.
I’m in favor of commuting the sentence of Blagojevich. He has suffered enough and has been in prison long enough. As for Stewart, I have no opinion.
The television show The Americans ended their run Wednesday night after six seasons on FX. In case you have never heard of this great show set in the 80s, here is how the website describes it:
The Americans is a period drama about the complex marriage of two KGB spies posing as Americans in suburban Washington D.C. during the Reagan administration.
The stars of the show are Philip Jennings, played by Matthew Rhys and Elizabeth Jennings, played by Keri Russell. Noah Emmerich plays FBI agent Stan Beeman, and Holly Taylor plays Paige Jennings, Philip and Elizabeth’s daughter.
There are a few series that I devoted my time to; Lost, West Wing, and Breaking Bad come to mind. The Americans were right up there with those great shows. If you like spy thrillers, watch The Americans.
One More Thing:
One of the problems with defending free speech is you often have to defend people that you find to be outrageous and unpleasant and disgusting. – Salman Rushdie
