The Sunday Message

And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. – Revelation 19:15 (KJV)

This past week a news story broke about a church called “World Peace and Unification Sanctuary” holding a religious event where “crown-wearing worshippers clutching AR-15 rifles drank holy wine and exchanged or renewed wedding vows in a commitment ceremony…” (AP)

The AR-15s were unloaded. The weapons were checked at the door to ensure this.

The Associated Press (AP) reported that the church, which has a worldwide following, believes the AR-15 symbolizes the “rod of iron” in the book of Revelation, and encouraged couples to bring the weapons.

The AP also reported that Rev. Sean Moon leads the church and he is the son of the late Rev. Sun Myung Moon, a self-proclaimed messiah who founded the Unification Church, which critics regard as a cult.

When I wrote about this in my “Thursday Numbers” column, I added, “There’s a church for everyone…” and apparently this is true.

There are several references in the Bible about the “rod of iron.” Besides the one I used at the top of this column, I found two others in the Kings James Version of Revelations:

And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father. – Revelation 2:27 (KJV)

And this one:

And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne. – Revelation 12:5 (KJV)

I’ve seen and heard Christians quarrel over such mundane things as which version of the Bible should be used in church, to whether wine or grape juice should be used in communion, to how long the services should last. I’ve heard them quarrel over the volume of the music and what music is played to how the Pastor is dressed.

In other words, Christians seem to be their own worst enemies.

This AR-15 story is just another example of how some believers of God lead others to stray away from what is really important as a Christian.

Have a great week!
