Caught My Eye…

Better days are coming; they are called Saturday and Sunday. – Unknown

Welcome to the big show to end the week “Caught My Eye” (CME)!

If you are a first-time visitor, CME is posted right here every Friday morning. This is when I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week. I often throw in a touch of sarcasm to make you smile – or to irritate you just a little – maybe both.

Topics that I am providing commentary about today include CNN Town Hall, Steve Daines, Greg Gianforte, School Resource Officer, Lindsey Vonn, Fake News, Olympic Figure Skating, and One More Thing!

CNN Town Hall:

For over two hours Wednesday night, CNN held a town hall meeting in Florida with parents and survivors of last week’s shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. You can read the full transcript HERE.

I was impressed that Florida’s two US senators, Republican Marco Rubio and Democrat Bill Nelson, as well as their Congressman, Democrat Ted Deutch, showed up to answer questions and face constituents.

Here in Montana, two of our three federal officials, Republican Senator Steve Daines and Republican U.S. Representative Greg Gianforte, have dodged holding face-to-face town hall meetings.

We pay Daines and Gianforte a lot of money to represent us in Washington. If Rubio, Nelson, and Deutch can participate in a town hall after this terrible tragedy, surely Daines and Gianforte can find the guts to hold a real town hall with their constituents.

If they can’t hold a face-to-face town hall, maybe they should find a new line of work.

School Resource Officer:

The Associated Press reported Thursday that the armed officer on duty at the Florida school where a shooter killed 17 people never went inside to engage the gunman and has been placed under investigation.

Shameful.

It was also reported that the officer, Scot Peterson, was suspended without pay and placed under investigation, then chose to resign.

Lindsey Vonn:

I like Lindsey Vonn’s honesty. Other people don’t care for it.

Vonn was asked by CNN how she felt about competing in the Olympic Games for the United States whose president is Donald Trump.

She responded with:

“Well, I hope to represent the people of the United States, not the president…. I take the Olympics very seriously, and what they mean and what they represent. What walking under our flag means at the opening ceremony. I want to represent our country well. I don’t think that there are a lot of people currently in our government that do that.”

Vonn was later asked if she would visit the White House with other Olympians and said, “Absolutely not. No.”

When someone in the public eye makes a political statement, there’s a good chance they will tick off about half the country. Vonn did just that. Of course, the people trying to get back at Vonn did so via Twitter.

I’m sure the Trump supporters love it that Vonn only won a bronze medal.

I’m sure Vonn can live with the consequences from what she said. I’m not sure the Vonn haters can live with the fact that she is still smiling.

Fake News:

It’s getting harder and harder to read things on Twitter and Facebook without having to check their accuracy.

We have morons amongst us who post stuff without checking to see if it is fake. I honestly think these people are why we place directions on shampoo bottles.

Sometimes they post it because it hurts a political figure they don’t like and they don’t care if it is fake.

Pro Tip: If you’re posting something from a right or left wing website, it’s probably tilted to help them or their political party or cause.

Pro Tip 2: I verify stuff through PolitiFact and Snopes quite often. These are two good websites to verify if something is true or not.

Olympic Figure Skating:

The competition in the 2018 Olympics has been great. It reminds me of the time many many years ago that I competed in figure skating. You can see a video of it HERE.

I did not win much, but I had a lot of fun…

One More Thing:

Just because you’re offended, doesn’t mean you’re right. – Unknown
