Tuesday Commentary: Fees, Shooting, & Cheaters

I fully support @realDonaldTrump’s interest in space travel to Mars, and I wish him the absolute best in his travels. – John Dingell (@JohnDingell) Former U.S. Rep. from Michigan.

Today’s commentary deals with:

  • Sticking it to the Man
  • Shooting in Great Falls
  • Montana Democrats – Cheaters

Sticking it to the Man:

The Republican-controlled Montana State Legislature has a little surprise in store for their fellow Montanans. In January we will be paying higher fees for vehicle registrations.

Ever since I can remember, the state legislature loves to increase “fees” on things Montanans use. It’s like a shell game. They can actually say they did not raise taxes.

Raising fees is another thing.

Speaking of taxes, in the article about the vehicle registration fees increasing, the Montana Standard pointed out that the Republican-controlled Montana legislature increased the gas taxes back in July.

A lot of people probably voted Republican because they wanted to keep more of their hard-earned money. Realistically, there’s really not much difference between Republicans and Democrats. They both like to spend our money and, in Washington, D.C., the money they spend is money we don’t have.

Shooting in Great Falls:

There was another shooting in Great Falls yesterday involving Great Falls Police officers.(GF Tribune)

In what has become the norm, the Great Falls Chief of Police David Bowen held a press conference in which he said nothing. As far as I can tell in the video, the local folks in the media did not press him to answer questions. They failed at their jobs.

I pray for all those involved in the shooting.

Cascade County Sheriff Bob Edwards took to Twitter writing, “Lord, please be with all LE involved.” That was nice. Then he added a little later:

Seems there is a condesending person out there… obviously you are not a fan of Law Enforcement for sure. Report facts not sarcasm. Put their boots on for a shift and then tell me about the life or death situation you made. God Bless our Law Enforcement always!

I am not sure who ticked him off, but it was nice to see Edwards respond to something.

Readers may remember that Edwards also failed to answer questions from local media back in August about an incident in which he was involved. Here is what I wrote about that:

Cascade County Sheriff Bob Edwards appeared in front of the local media and read a statement in which he apologized for the actions that led to a misdemeanor assault charge. During the incident, it was reported that Edwards placed a gun in his mouth. This was confirmed by Helena Police Chief Troy McGee.

The charges have been deferred.

Edwards read his statement then left without taking questions.

I am not sure how Edwards could ever get reelected after this incident.

Until the local media holds officials accountable, we’ll never get the answers. It’s a trend for law enforcement not to answer questions from the media in Great Falls and that’s a trend that has to stop.

Montana Democrats – Cheaters:

MTN reported that the Montana Democratic Party violated campaign-reporting laws last year by failing to identify which candidates it was supporting with $300,000 in ads and other spending, the state’s top campaign enforcer said Monday.

MTN also reported that Commissioner of Political Practices Jeff Mangan also said the party did not properly report that it would be spending money to support nonpartisan Supreme Court candidate Dirk Sandefur in the 2016 election.

The funny part is that Mangan is one of the Democrats – he served as a Democrat in the state House and Senate from 1999 to 2006. (Source)

They must have really screwed up to get one of their own to rule against them!

I’ll bet Mangan’s Christmas party schedule got a little lighter after this…
