Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be. – Abraham Lincoln
Hey kids – welcome to another edition of Terrific News Tuesday (TNT)!
In case this is your first time reading TNT, this column is all about good news. I know it’s hard to believe, but I won’t be complaining or criticizing anyone or anything in this column today – just writing about some terrific news that caught my attention!
Here is some of the good stuff in this edition of TNT:
- Best/Worst Community Colleges
- Summer Reading Program
- No Homework Policy
- Wedding Cake
- Football Season
Best/Worst Community Colleges:
The personal financial website WalletHub released a report of the best and worst community colleges.
The good news is that overall Montana was ranked fifth best state for community colleges.
North Central Missouri College (MO), a community college that your humble blogger attended in Trenton, MO, made the top 10 list as one of the best community colleges. Congrats to NCMC!
Check out the methodology used and the full list from WalletHub HERE.
Summer Reading Program:
Applause to Great Falls Public Schools employees and community members who volunteered to staff the mobile library that traveled around Great Falls this summer handing out books to children.
The Great Falls Tribune reported:
For five weeks this summer, Carol Paul and her mobile library took to the streets. Over the course of the summer, 2,612 books were distributed to 1,496 students. The literary trailer made 38 stops around the community.
The Super Summer Read 6 library made about four stops a night, often to parks with hordes of children, their parents and their dogs waiting to trade in their books for new ones.
Congrats and thanks to all those who made this program happen!
No Homework Policy:
OK, I hated homework when I was in school. Apparently, others do too. A note from a Fort Worth, Texas, second-grade teacher about no homework went viral after a parent posted it on Facebook. It appears legitimate. Here is the information contained in the note:
After much research this summer, I am trying something new. Homework will only consist of work that your student did not finish during the school day. There will be no formally assigned homework this year.
Research has been unable to prove that homework improves student performance. Rather, I ask that you spend your evenings doing things that are proven to correlate with student success. Eat dinner as a family, read together, play outside, and get your child to bed early.
There are several ideas about assigned homework, but this is good news for at least one second-grade class in Fort Worth, Texas…
ABC News recently reported that after 61 years of marriage, Ann and Ken Fredericks still celebrate their anniversary by eating a piece of their original wedding cake.
The cake now only about three by four inches. ABC news also reported that the happy couple wed on Aug. 19, 1955, and claim the dark fruit cake made by Ann’s grandmother is just as tasty now as it was then — although the coloring is a bit different.
I don’t think the cake would last that long around most houses…
In some locations across our fruited plains, high school football season has already started or will be starting soon. Major college football is starting next week, and the NFL season starts the second week in September.
That’s very good news….
