Monday’s Political Odds & Ends

I wish I could say something classy and inspirational, but that just wouldn’t be our style. Pain heals. Chicks dig scars. Glory… lasts forever. – Shane Falco (The Replacements)

Happy Monday! Are you ready for some March Madness? March Madness has taken on a whole new meaning this year with madness happening in politics as well as on the basketball court.

Today is another one of those days in which there are several major stories out there that I want to comment about – so it’s another “Political Odds & Ends” day!

Today’s topics include the Blog of the Week, TWW Poll Results Zinke vs. Juneau, Last Day to File for office, Campaign Volunteers, Bumper Stickers, Closed Primaries, Sunshine Week, and Tuesday’s primaries! There’s much more so read on…

Blog of the Week:

On Saturday, The Western Word (TWW) was the “Blog of the Week” for the Great Falls Tribune. They used this quote:

“The biggest question I have here at The Western Word is will U.S. Senator Steve Daines (R-Mont.), who has endorsed Marco Rubio, be in Florida Tuesday night to comfort little Marco when he loses his home state?”

— Jackie M. “Mike” Brown, Great Falls,, onetime staffer for former Republican U.S. Sen. Conrad Burns of Montana

It’s an honor – thank you Great Falls Tribune! I couldn’t do it without Montana’s elected officials and political parties because they continually provide me with an endless supply of topics!

Maybe with this honor, U.S. Senator Steve Daines will make me the Montanan of the Week?

Everyone is fair game at TWW – and that is what makes it interesting – and that is why you should read it every day!

TWW Poll Results Zinke vs. Juneau:

Last week I asked readers, “Who do you want to be the next U.S. Representative for Montana?” The results are in:

Denise Juneau – 60%
Ryan Zinke – 36%
Other – 4%

Thanks to everyone who voted!

Last Day to File:

Here in Montana, today (March 14) is the last day for candidates to file declarations for Primary Election. So you have until 5:00 p.m. to file for office! (MT SoS)

Here at TWW, we’ll have a rundown of the candidates and key contests in the upcoming days.

Thanks to all of the candidates who are running for office.

Campaign Volunteers:

Over the years, I’ve given speeches to several groups and many times I told people they should volunteer on a political campaign at least once in their lives.

This is a great time to start! Just contact a candidate that believes in some of the same things you do and ask them if you can volunteer. You can also contact one of the political parties and offer to help them.

I think you will enjoy it, and you’ll be making a difference!

Bumper Stickers:

I received my Bullock/Cooney bumper sticker in the mail Saturday. I have some other bumper stickers coming after my request on Friday:

I am always looking for free campaign bumper stickers (that does not mean I endorse you), so if you are offering them let me know via the official email of The Western Word ( and I’ll send you the mailing address to my bunker.

Thanks to Team Bullock for the free bumper sticker:

Question of the Day – Closed Primaries:

The Great Falls Tribune asked, “Do you support closed primaries” for their question of the day on Saturday. The results are:

No – 54%
Yes – 46%

I don’t support closed primaries, so I voted ‘No.” The Republican Party would like to have closed primaries in Montana. It is a purity issue with some of the extreme wackos who are running the party. You can read a story about it HERE.

The “big tent” talked about in the Republican Party is being closed due to the far-right wackos.

Sunshine Week:

March 13-19 is Sunshine Week which according to their website is a national initiative to promote a dialogue about the importance of open government and freedom of information. Participants include news media, civic groups, libraries, nonprofits, schools and others interested in the public’s right to know. (

The Western Word supports Sunshine week and thanks all the folks who strive for our government to be open.

On the other hand, it’s important that those reporting about our government make sure they disclose any conflicts they have that could, or give the impression that could, taint their reporting.

Tuesday Primaries:

This Tuesday (March 15) Ohio, Florida, Illinois, and the Northern Mariana Islands Republican Caucus all have “GOP Winner-Take-All” primaries. There are also primaries in Missouri and North Carolina! (Source)

Make sure you get out and vote if you live in one of these places!

We may have more candidates drop out after Tuesday so follow me on Twitter (@TheWesternWord) and on The Western Word’s Facebook page to keep informed!
