Caught My Eye…

If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself. – Henry Ford

Welcome to the big show to end the week! If you are a first-time visitor, “Caught My Eye” is posted right here every Friday morning! This is when I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week. I often throw in a touch of sarcasm to make you smile – or to irritate you just a little – maybe both.

Today’s topics that Caught My Eye include:

  • Senate District 10 race
  • Gianforte’s Integrity Pledge
  • Bullock’s Executive Order
  • Tester & Post Offices
  • TSA & Guns

There’s much more so read on…

Senate District 10:

I am on a lot of political mailing lists (snail & email) so I can stay up to date on what is happening in the political world and bring it to you – and comment about it.

This week (for some reason) I received a fundraising letter from State Senate District 10 Republican candidate J.C. Kantorowicz that caught my eye. According to the Montana Secretary of State’s website, Kantorowicz has filed for SD-10 and so has current State Representative Steve Fitzpatrick. They are both Republicans so they will face off in a Republican primary.

By the way, I do not reside in SD-10…and I did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

The letter starts rather dramatically with, “I am about to engage in the fight of my life” and then he quickly goes all-in by calling his opponent (whom he never names in the letter) a RINO (Republican In Name Only).

I read the letter out loud to my family and we all had a great laugh! Tears were rolling down my cheeks as I read the final line, “Please donate to help my campaign win Senate District 10 and defeat the RINO.”

You can see the letter here (click on it for larger version):

It looks like the Republican Party in 2016 is still having some internal struggles nationally, state-wide, and locally. You’re probably saying, “No kidding.” Calling moderates RINOs will only add to the problem – and probably get the RINO elected. I’ve seen right-wing wackos call fellow Republicans “RINOs” when the fellow Republican had a lifetime conservative rating of 90%. That’s what turns moderate and independent voters off.

I am sure when the primary is over the loser will vote for the winner in the general election because you would want to help the person you agree with 75% of the time get elected over someone from the other party who you agree with 40% of the time. Right?

Right…

Gianforte’s Integrity Pledge:

Yesterday was only day two of Republican gubernatorial candidate Greg Gianforte’s barnstorming tour around Montana. This is where he laid out his plans for the state if he is elected governor. On day two Gianforte upped the ante some in the Montana Governor’s race by calling for no special interest PAC money.

Gianforte then signed a pledge not to take the PAC money and delivered it to Governor Steve Bullock’s office urging him to join him in rejecting special interest money. That sounds like something out of Brian Schweitzer’s playbook.

Bullock’s campaign manager responded to Gianforte saying, “Montanans shouldn’t waste time on his tired political gimmicks and hypocrisy.”

What else could they say?

So was it a gimmick? Absolutely. Is it hypocrisy? Maybe. Did it get Gianforte some publicity during day two of this announcement tour? Yes. The “gimmick” was shown on the evening news and there are stories about it today’s newspapers.

So I give the point to Gianforte. I wonder what other tricks he and his team have planned. This race is already fun to watch…

Gianforte also pledged to donate the Governor’s salary to charity if he was elected. Gianforte may be channeling Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump.

I’m thinking we’re not too far off from hearing Gianforte say “Make Montana Great Again” which would look nice on a hat…

Bullock’s Executive Order:

On Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., day, Montana Governor Steve Bullock announced that he was issuing an Executive Order expanding prohibitions on discrimination in state employment and state contracts.

The Executive Order expands prohibitions on discrimination in state contracts to include:

  • Pregnancy, childbirth or medical conditions related to pregnancy or childbirth,
  • Genetic information, gender identity or gender expression, and
  • Military service and veteran status.

I posted the story about this on The Western Word’s Facebook page and one person commented that Bullock’s “been in office for over 3 years, so wouldn’t those protections have been valuable to LGTB employees of the state and contractors when he first took office?” He added that it is “Sad when politics comes before principle.”

I think those comments nailed it. Although I agree with the Executive Order, it does look like it was done for political purposes. That’s too bad.

Tester & Post Offices:

Yesterday I happened to read a press release from U.S. Senator Jon Tester about Post Offices, especially rural Post Offices. Tester told Postal Service officials that rural folks “need mail service the most and without the Postal Service they are in a world of hurt.”

Yawn…

Back in 2011, a report from the Postal Service said there were around 36,400 Post Offices in the United States and they have around 596,000 career employees. They processed about 177 billion pieces of mail in 2009.

I said at that time they should do a Base Realignment and Closing Commission (BRAC) like the military does to either close or realign military installations. They should do it for Post Offices and Congress should approve it.

Don’t get me wrong, I like getting my mail delivered to my home. They do a tremendous job, but it is well past time to close and regionalize some of the Post Offices and postal facilities.

If they closed several Post Offices, it would save valuable time in Congress because they spend a lot of time writing and passing bills to name Post Offices.

2,653 Guns:

The Transportation Security Administration announced Thursday it discovered a record 2,653 guns last year at airport checkpoints. The total represented a 20% increase from the 2,212 found in 2014. (USA Today)

These people are a special kind of stupid.

Maybe this actually is “Obama’ s Gun Grab” which is sneaky…

One More Thing:

Do the right thing. It will gratify some people and astonish the rest. – Mark Twain

      • Rep. Debra Lamm (R-Livingston) is a possibility. She is a former lobbyist for the Montana Family Foundation.
After the Bullock-McLean debacle, I’m sure the Gianforte campaign has something up its sleeve!
