Thursday Numbers

Take it easy
Take it easy
Don’t let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy
Lighten up while you still can
Don’t even try to understand
Just find a place to make your stand
And take it easy
Take It Easy” (Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey)

Welcome to the “Thursday Numbers!” In case you’re a first-time visitor, this is the weekly column where I take a look at the numbers that are in the news (in descending order) and provide commentary sometimes sprinkled with just a little bit of sarcasm.

This week’s topics include NorthWestern Energy, Greg Gianforte & BuzzFeed News & Democrats, UM/MSU Presidents & their pay, unemployment, Montana millionaires, Dow Jones, Obama’s job approval rating, Judge Judy, NBA’s most popular jerseys, Buffalo Bills, and Obama’s “Gun Grab.”

31,600,000

That’s how much of a temporary rate increase the Montana Public Service Commission has approved for NorthWestern Energy after revenue fell short of the company’s forecast with its purchase of 11 hydroelectric dams in 2014. (AP)

It’s amazing that someone can run a company and have a shortfall of $31.6 million.

1,100,000

A BuzzFeed News examination of tax returns shows the Gianforte Family Charitable Trust donated more than $1.1 million over a period of six years to some of the political groups leading the charge against LGBT rights in the United States. (BuzzFeed News)

Although the left may want to make LGBT rights a campaign issue, I don’t think it will be in Montana. Talking about Gianforte being extremely rich and about some of Gianforte’s religious views might be the best tactics to use. Plus, with him being the head of the multi-million dollar company, he had to make some enemies over the years or a skeleton or two in the old closet…

Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see how the Democrats attack Gianforte.

309, 207

That’s the new base pay for Montana State University President Waded Cruzado, University of Montana President Royce Engstrom, and Commissioner of Higher Education Clayton Christian. (AP)

I find it hard to believe that they are each worth that much per year. One person could do the job of all three.

293,000

That’s how many people filed new claims for unemployment last week. (USDOL)

20,899

MTN News is reporting that Phoenix Marketing International released a report this week ranking the number of millionaire households in each state. Montana ranked 33rd among the states, up six spots from last year’s rankings with 20,899 households with more than $1 million in assets. That’s about 4.8% of all Montana households.

I did not make the list…but there’s always next year!

249

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down nearly 550 points before managing to regain more than half in a late day rally to close down 249 points yesterday. (Fox Business)

50

That’s how many people showed up in Billings yesterday for Greg Gianforte’s announcement that he was running for Montana governor. (AP)

I was surprised there were not more people attending the announcement. Gianforte did win the Montana news cycle on Wednesday and he will win it again today with announcements scheduled for other locations in Montana.

46.2

President Barack Obama had a job approval rating average of 46.2% in his seventh year. George W. Bush averaged 33.3% in his seventh year, Bill Clinton averaged 60.5, and Ronald Reagan averaged 48.2 in his seventh year. (Gallup)

Gallup also reported that Obama may end up with one of the lowest approval ratings for eight years unless it rises significantly during this last year – so the Obama haters have that going for them…

10

A report that claims that there is a crisis in civic education in the United States says that nearly 10% of all college graduates think that TV’s ‘Judge Judy’ is on the Supreme Court. (Fox 5 New York)

Lord help us…

The NBA’s five most popular jerseys that were sold in 2015 belong to 1. Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors, 2. LeBron James, Cleveland Cavaliers, 3. Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers, 4. Kristaps Porzingis, New York Knicks and 5. Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder. (AP)

I think the NBA is very boring until the playoffs begin in mid-April.

1

The Buffalo Bills of the NFL hired Kathryn Smith Wednesday to be a special teams quality control coach, making her the league’s first female full-time assistant coach. (USA Today)

Congrats to Smith.

There are less than 365 days left in the Obama Administration. I am happy to report that I have had zero guns taken from me in the “Obama Gun Grab.”

Zero.

I guess saying “Obama Gun Grab” is a good way to raise campaign funds (like this fellow) and gather names for your reelection bid even though the actual “Gun Grab” has yet to happen.

Trump has filed for bankruptcy 4 times, been bailed out by his Dad more than once and look at him now.
    What a country-Yakov Smirnov

Speaking of 1. Sarah Thomas was hired by the NFL as a referee at the beginning of this year. Read about her at the time and haven’t seen a word since. I guess she’s doing a good job.

  2. How does a temporary rate increase work? I can’t ever remember one ending…

Wasn’t the LGBT issue resolved by the Supreme Court and no longer an issue?

I don’t think we even teach Civics anymore…do we?

Obama has sold more guns than Charleton Heston and the NRA ever thought of…even El Chapo has some from him!!!

    • Barry – Temp rate increase – you are correct!
LGBT issue – they are going after his anti-LGBT support in the past.
Civics being taught – Yes it is, but not civility
Obama and guns – you are correct. There are more guns than ever!

      As always, thanks!
