Campaign 2014: Potpourri

Happy Tuesday! It’s a potpourri of political news!

Today I write about the U.S. Senate and U.S House debates, the new campaign ad from John Lewis, Steve Daines/Ryan Zinke & Veterans, and a $500 per hour lawyer. There’s a lot more so read on.

By the way, The Western Word is once again on Facebook. Please “Like” The Western Word page HERE. I promise to make it enjoyable.

U.S. Senate/House Debates:

According to a story from the Associated Press, there are problems scheduling U.S. House and U.S. Senate candidate debates this fall.

That’s ridiculous.

In reading the article, it appears the Republican candidates (Steve Daines and Ryan Zinke) are the problem (this time). They are both ahead in recent polls so they are doing a little rope-a-dope. I’ve seen Daines and Zinke debate, and I can see why they might be leery about debating.

There should always be at least two debates for the federal candidates after Labor Day.

Lewis “My Family” Ad:

U.S. House candidate John Lewis (D) unveiled his first TV ad of 2014 on Monday called, “My Family.” You can watch it HERE.

Here’s the script:

I’m John Lewis. And this is my family.
Wait, hold on, that’s more like it.
With us, what you see is what you get.
Unlike my opponent, I don’t have my own super PAC trying to buy me a seat in Congress.
But I do have a plan to cut wasteful spending, cut Congress’ pay and get rid of their gold plated pensions so we can keep our promises to our veterans and our seniors.
I’m John Lewis and I approved this message to make Congress work for Montana.

This is a good first ad for the Lewis campaign in which he introduces his beautiful family.

I give the “My Family” ad an 8/10.

Daines/Zinke & Veterans:

It’s been a tough couple of weeks for Steve Daines and Ryan Zinke in regard to veterans.

The Missoulian editorial board decided, “Daines, Zinke must not mislead Montanans about veterans” in their editorial on Monday. You can read it HERE.

Before that, the Billings Gazette published their opinion entitled “Daines crossed the line in mailers.” You can read it HERE. The troubling part in the story about Daines and the mailers to me is that Daines and his team failed to answer letters from the Marine Corps League about the problem. I know how they feel; I have contacted Daines’ House office and his campaign office several times and never received a response.

$500 an Hour:

According to the Wall Street Journal, “House Republicans revealed Monday they will pay an outside law firm $500 an hour to pursue their lawsuit against President Barack Obama.” Republicans believe “Obama overstepped his legal authority in implementing the Affordable Care Act.”

The craziness continues in Washington. The lawsuit is election year politics.

Pro-Tip: I could do the work for $40 per hour and come just as close to winning the case as the $500 per hour lawyer…

  1. I agree it’s a good looking family but the issues he raises are vapid. A super PAC (an issue that political insiders are aware of but not the masses), Congressional pay (also not a burning issue), cut wasteful government spending (not particularly original) — really, the same sort of rhetoric coming from the Republican candidates. I give it a 5/10.
