MT House 2014: We Have a Candidate!

John Lewis is first.

Democrat John Lewis announced that he is running for Montana’s at-large U.S. House seat. Steve Daines currently occupies that seat. It seems that almost everyone is waiting for Daines to make a decision about running for U.S. Senate before they decide what to do.

Almost everyone except John Lewis – and you at least have to respect that. Lewis is running for U.S. House no matter what Daines does. This is somewhat refreshing considering what we’ve been seeing so far this election season – everyone waiting for the 800-pound gorilla to make a move.

Lee Newspapers reported that the announcement was “one of the first definitive moves in what’s become a political waiting game for Montana’s two major electoral contests in 2014…”

Lewis was the state director for U.S. Senator Max Baucus until a few months ago. Like him or not, one thing Baucus did not do was lose elections. Montana Republicans never beat him. It seems some of that rubbed off on another former Baucus staffer, Jim Messina. Who knows if Lewis will be the second generation of Max Baucus when it comes to campaigning and elections, but the tools are there for him to succeed. Plus he will have an army of volunteers to help him.

That’s probably why the boys and girls at the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) were so quick to send out a statement to Lee Newspapers about Lewis’ announcement making sure to tie him to Baucus’ work on Obamacare.

Lewis will need to tell voters where he agrees and disagrees with Baucus on the issues. There are some really tough questions that can be thrown his way, but this is Montana so don’t expect him to be grilled.

Looking at the big picture, I’m thinking it might be nice to have a House of Representatives that did not hold a vote on repealing or defunding Obamacare every other day – a House that works on more important issues – but that’s just me.

Lewis’ move may mean we’ll actually see some other candidates make a decision. They better hurry; the filing deadline is March 10, 2014. That’s just 196 days away!

  1. Any to keep the dirtbag republicans out of the Senate. These boys are willing to destroy the credit rating of the US, as they have proven before. The republican House members have become a treasonous group intent on America’s destruction. Thankfully, I believe that people will force republicans to stop their treasonous acts once they cause a crash in the stock market and damage everyone’s 401(k)s. A government shutdown causes long-lasting instability to the US economy, but the republicans have never understood how a free market economy works (see, for instance, Herbert Hoover and the Great Depression).
