State of the Union: Guns & Zombies

U.S. Constitution – Article 2 Section 3

He shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.

Mister Speaker…The President of the United States…

Are you excited? Is this a great country or what?

The State of the Union (SOTU) is tonight and barring an attack from Zombies here in Montana I’ll be watching (and since there’s no football games on TV).

I imagine we’ll hear President Barack Obama talk about guns, immigration, jobs and the economy, education, campaign finance, the sequester, Afghanistan, veterans, and much more (but probably not about Zombies).

Speaking of guns, it’s being reported that rocker Ted Nugent will attend the State of the Union address as the guest of Texas Republican Rep. Steve Stockman. Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly will be attending as guests of Senator John McCain and Rep. Ron Barber.

By the way, classic rock fans will be happy to hear that REO Speedwagon, Styx, and Ted Nugent are kicking off “The Midwest Rock ‘n Roll Express” tour in April! Par-tee!

Members of Congress can invite one person to attend the SOTU. CNN has the guest list. I was not invited…

By the way, two Republicans (so far) are going to respond to the President’s speech. They will give the official Republican response and an official Tea Party response. U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (Florida) was chosen to be the sacrificial GOP lamb picked to follow the President with the official Republican response thus ending his Presidential aspirations. U.S. Senator Rand Paul (Kentucky) gives the Tea Party response following in the footsteps of Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain. Hopefully Rand Paul will look at the camera while giving the speech, unlike Bachmann.

On Sunday, the New York Times published a story about nuclear weapons saying the President would talk in the SOTU about “drastically reducing nuclear arsenals around the world — after securing agreement in recent months with the United States military that the American nuclear force can be cut in size by roughly a third.”

Montana’s U.S. Senators (Max Baucus and Jon Tester) fired off a press release after they heard about it (proving they actually keep up with current events). Tester said, “It would be misguided to further alter our nuclear stockpile before the New START Treaty is fully implemented, and the Administration needs to put the brakes on any plan that weakens our national defense.”

On Monday White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said, “I do not anticipate a new announcement in the State of the Union address” about cutting our nuclear arsenal.

Hmmm. But Carney didn’t say anything about Zombies….

Baucus, Tester, and Rep. Steve Daines must remain vigilante. Closing one or two (of our three) nuclear bases are a possibility these days.

During the SOTU, I stay away from the cable news stations and the regular network stations and normally watch CSPAN so I don’t have to listen to the commentators, unless James Carville is on TV because he says things like, “Drag a $100 bill through a trailer camp and there’s no telling what you will find.”

Warning: If you are playing a “drinking game” during the speech, be careful.

I will be Tweeting before, during, and after the speech – follow me @TheWesternWord for updates and semi-professional analysis.
