Welcome to the 132nd edition of “Caught My Eye” and welcome to Friday!
If this is your first time visiting The Western Word, the “Caught My Eye” column is where I take a quick look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week – and I often throw in some sarcasm just to make you smile. So get ready to head into your weekend armed with knowledge and a smile.
Today I write about the Grammys, Broke Girls, Postal Service & Montana’s Delegation, Daines’ offices and his first bill, Westboro Baptist Church, Rubio the Savior, State of the Union, Sold Again, God Made a (Factory) Farmer, Home Sweet Home, and much more!
Postal Service & Montana’s Delegation:
The three members of the Montana Congressional Delegation were upset with the decision by the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to stop Saturday delivery. The Billings Gazette has their story. Of course many other members of Congress are micromanaging the Postal Service these days, too.
Stopping Saturday delivery is not a big deal – and it won’t solve the USPS problem, either.
Unlike the Postal Service, newly-elected U.S. Representative Steve Daines is not putting an office in every city across Montana. He recently told the Billings Gazette that he “is opening offices in Helena, Missoula and Billings and will have a presence in Great Falls as well.”
I wonder what “a presence in Great Falls” means. Is that the same as a “presence in” Havre or Lewistown or Glendive or Kalispell?
Maybe his people can e-mail me with the answer at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Daines’ First Bill:
Wait for it…wait for it…it’s a bill about balancing the budget! The punch line to this is that “budgets starting in 2015 must show a predicted balanced budget by 2023, or lawmakers won’t be paid.”
They Saw the Light:
According to the Kansas City Star, “Two granddaughters of Westboro Baptist Church firebrand Fred Phelps have split with the Topeka-based congregation, indicating their views have evolved and they now regret the pain they have caused others.”
God bless them for their decision…
Marco Rubio = Savior:
U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) will deliver the Republican response to the President’s SOTU address Tuesday evening. Rubio’s speech will be delivered in both English and Spanish.
Since he’s been called the “savior” of the Republican Party he will probably deliver both versions at the same time…
State of the Union (SOTU):
Speaking about the SOTU, President Obama is averaging 7080 words in his previous SOTU addresses and 1 hour five minutes and twenty-one seconds in length.
Yes, there’s a website with this information…for us political junkies who care enough to know the information!
The Associated Press yesterday reported “Charter Communications says it is buying cable company Optimum West from CableVision Systems Corp. for about $1.63 billion in cash.”
The first thing I thought when I heard about it is maybe now that fellow who does all those commercials for Optimum cable will get off my TV…
“CBS bans breasts, buttocks from Grammys”
That was the headline in the Kansas City Star this morning. In other words, leave `em at home people!
But don’t we watch these shows to see what people are wearing (or not wearing)?
“Me Likey Broke Girls.”
And just like that he was fired…
God Made a (Factory) Farmer:
A little fun with the Super Bowl commercial…

Vince Neal of Mötley Crüe turns 52 today. Since it’s Friday it’s OK to take a few minutes to watch “Home Sweet Home” by the Crüe.
One More Thing:
Don’t forget to stretch…
