Thursday Numbers

Welcome to Thursday! If this is your first time visiting The Western Word, “Thursday Numbers” is my weekly column where I take a look at the numbers in the news (in descending order) and provide commentary sometimes laced with just a little sarcasm.

NOTICE: If you read this column you will probably gain knowledge not found on other websites! You may be able to use this information to impress your family, friends, and co-workers. The information might even be life changing – so consider yourself warned…

This week I write about Kim Jong Un, child abuse, unemployment, settlement checks, U.S. Senate, Ted Nugent, Taylor Swift, Steve Daines, breast implants, blood alcohol level, and much more!

That’s how many votes North Korea’s Kim Jong Un received in Time Magazine’s person of the year poll.

Fortunately, the selection as Time’s Person of the Year is not based on poll results (Psst, don’t tell the North Koreans).

According to a report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), “The number of reported child abuse and neglect incidents has dropped nationwide for the fifth consecutive year.” HHS “estimates 681,000 cases of child abuse or neglect across the country in 2011.”

This is good news, but 681,000 cases are still way too many.

That’s the number of new claims for unemployment according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Labor. That is a decrease of 29,000 from the week before.

Good news – but it will be better when the new claims fall below 300,000.

According to the Associated Press, “A judge has authorized the start of payments to American Indians in a $3.4 billion settlement involving the federal government’s mishandling of land trust royalties.”

About 350,000 beneficiaries will receive $1,000 checks, hopefully before Christmas, which is very nice.  There will be more checks issued in 2013.

KRTV (CBS) is reporting that a Public Policy Polling poll found that “84% of Montanans think the U.S. Senate does not deal with important issues in a timely fashion.”

You really have to get up pretty early to fool Montanans…

Happy Birthday to Ted Nugent – he turns 64 today! Here’s a music video from Ted’s days with the Damn Yankees called, High Enough.

I first saw Nugent during his “Cat Scratch Fever” tour in 1977 – it was freaking LOUD and it was outdoors. Yes, I am that old…

Happy Birthday to Taylor Swift – she turns 23 years old today. Enjoy the video “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” HERE.

U.S. Representative-elect Steve Daines has been assigned to three House committees when he takes office in January. Those committees are Natural Resources, Transportation, and Homeland Security.

Daines would have been a better fit for a seat on Energy and Commerce committee. Personally, I would have liked to see him on Armed Services or Appropriations with a seat on the Defense subcommittee.

Montana is back near the bottom of the 435 member House in seniority…

The Associated Press reports, “Spanish authorities say they have arrested a Panamanian woman arriving at Barcelona airport with 1.38 kilograms (3 pounds) of cocaine concealed in breast implants.”

Reportedly, that was the blood alcohol level for Dallas Cowboys lineman Josh Brent, who is “charged with intoxication manslaughter in the one-car accident that killed his teammate Jerry Brown.”

This is a sad deal for all involved. Drunk driving kills
