The Democratic National Convention (DNC) started yesterday in Charlotte, North Carolina, and there were some great speeches delivered throughout the afternoon and into the evening. If you like great speeches it was well worth watching!
Today I write about the debt, Nancy Keenan, Julián Castro, Michelle Obama, Denise Juneau, the Brian Schweitzer sideshow, and much more.
$16,000,000,000,000:
The Republicans were served up a softball on Tuesday when the national debt went over $16 trillion – that’s $16,000,000,000,000 – if you’re counting zeros at home. Of course, the GOP is partly responsible for the debt mess, but they don’t want voters to remember those days. According to Roll Call, the Republican National Committee already had a campaign ad ready to go about 30 minutes after the debt hit $16 trillion.
Both political parties are to blame for this mess…
Nancy Keenan:
Montanan Nancy Keenan, who is President of NARAL Pro-Choice America, gave a really strong 8:00 minute “red meat” speech that you can watch HERE or read HERE. She hit the Republicans hard with this:
“We believe that rape is rape. We believe that a woman should make health care decisions with her family, her doctor, and her God. And we believe that there’s no place in that room for politicians—especially politicians who don’t know how women’s bodies work.”
Ouch!
Julián Castro:
Castro is the Mayor of San Antonio, Texas, and he brought up a couple of key points during his speech . One was “Mitt Romney just doesn’t get it” and the second is that Romney “just has no idea how good he’s had it.”
It was a powerful speech from Castro – even CNN had a banner on the screen during his speech that read, “Rising Star” during his speech.
About halfway through Castro’s speech I noticed as the cameras were panning across the arena that the crowd at the Democratic National Convention resembled Main Street America more than the Republican National Convention did last week. With more of Main Street represented, it might just enable the Democrats to keep Obama in office for another term.
Michelle Obama:
First lady Michelle Obama took to the stage to personally talk about President Barack Obama. She delivered a fantastic speech that I believe was equal to Condoleezza Rice’s speech during the Republican Convention last week.
Viewers were left knowing that Barack and Michelle Obama started with very little growing up and they have realized the American dream. On the other hand, Mitt Romney was born into money (the silver spoon) and he is disconnected from the average American. This is the theme that I believe the Democrats need to continue with – just show Romney as out of touch with middle class America.
Many people who worked for the mission of the Republican Party and their candidates feel the Party has left many people behind because they have gone too far to the right. Those same people are now looking closely at the Democratic Party to see what they have to offer. Last night Michelle Obama did a great job connecting those disgruntled voters to her side of aisle by telling her and Barack Obama’s story – a story that showed that although your daddy may not be rich and powerful, you still have the opportunity to be successful in America – and realize the American dream…
Denise Juneau:
According to several sources Montana State Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau will speak today at 5:00 p.m. Mountain Time. The DNC streams their convention live HERE.
Brian Schweitzer:
Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer may speak at the convention, but more importantly my favorite writer, Dave Barry, tells about meeting Schweitzer at the CNN Grill. The headline is “A Governor Demonstrates His Castration Technique” which should draw readers from far and wide…
Schweitzer is always a great sideshow. If he speaks during the convention, the organizers better watch out if he asks to use an empty chair…
Today:
OK, the big thing is the NFL season starts today with the Dallas Cowboys playing at the New York Giants. At the DNC former President Clinton and Massachusetts Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren are the headliners.

I believe the relationship between Michelle and Barack is more genuine than that of Mitt and Ann. Michelle proved that with her speech about the President. I will miss tonight’s convention because of my new work schedule at Dish, but I bought the Hopper, and since I have Prime Time Anytime it will record the convention automatically without taking space on my DVR. I think Obama deserves another four years in office, Romney is not qualified to run America.
Please. Barack grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth as well. He went to all the best private schools.
And it is clear he is way more detached from America than Romney is. As evidenced by Michelle’s wanton spending of taxpayer dollars taking separate jets to HI for vacation, date night to NYC, and lavish trips to Africa. Let’s not forget the constant parties in the White House.
Come on man, you biased hate for anyone that had it better than you growing up and now should at the very least extend to both men.
At least Romney created jobs with his wealth. BO got rich forcing people to part with their wealth and banks to lend to people they financially shouldnt.
One is a competant proven job creator the other is a pompous and insolent job destroyer.
I don’t love Romney, but Obama makes him look like the All-American pick.
Ryan – Thanks for commenting. I appreciate your views. Your last line, “I don’t love Romney…” just about tells the whole problem with Mitt Romney in 2008 and 2012. Many people are not sure they even like him enough to campaign for him – do the grassroots campaign work for him – let alone vote for him.
BTW, I don’t have hate for anyone who had it better than me growing up. I’ve said many times that I’d like to see someone run who is more like the average guy or gal a mortgage and some credit card bills…and I don’t care which party they belong. Romney and Obama are not the average guys.
Romney just comes across as rich and out of touch – that’s his biggest problem. Obama comes across as someone you’d like to have a beer with, shoot hoops with, and talk sports with.
People who are thinking of voting for Romney are saying “I can learn to love him…”
But will they???
