Happy Monday faithful readers and welcome to another edition of Monday Morning Politics! This column is where I take a look at some of the political news from the past weekend and put it in one place for all to see. Psst…sometimes I add my commentary!
Today I take a look at several Cebull stories, wackiness from a legislator, a complaint, the U.S. House race, a shocking discovery about Tester and Obama, a deadline, Super Tuesday, ultra rich, National Parks, Veterans health care and much more!!!
Legislator still questioning Obama’s eligibility:
From the “good grief” file, the local CBS news station aired a story about Montana State Representative Bob Wagner (R-Harrison) sending “a letter to [Montana Secretary of State] Linda McCulloch saying her office has the solemn duty to ensure that Obama is indeed qualified” to be on the ballot in Montana.
If you’re a Democrat or supporting a Democrat you have to hope stories like this one go viral – it makes the Republicans look so freaking wacky.
Cebull, Cebull, Cebull…
The Cebull Poll:
The Great Falls Tribune (which broke the story about Judge Cebull and his “racially charged” email) did a poll about the Judge and his predicament asking, “Should Montana Chief U.S. District Judge Richard Cebull resign for forwarding a racially charged email from work?”
A lot of people participated (1213) in the non-scientific poll and 58% said “Yes” and 42% said “No.”
The Cebull Petition:
There’s an on-line petition “Initiate impeachment procedure against U.S. District Judge Richard Cebull” that anyone interested can access HERE.
The Cebull Friends:
The Great Falls Tribune attempted to “milk” the Judge Cebull story for all it’s worth by running a story on Saturday about his friends and their thoughts about his situation.
The Cebull Jokes:
Some folks enjoyed my Tweets “Jokes Judge Cebull Wished He Sent” with the hashtag #JokesJudgeCebullWishedHeSent. Check them out on Twitter!
The Billings Gazette on Cebull:
The Editorial Board from the Billings Gazette gave their opinion about Judge Cebull and his situation writing in Sunday’s paper, “We call on Judge Cebull to put this awful incident to rest honorably by stepping down.”
MT GOP Complaint:
According to a press release from the Montana Republican Party, they “filed a complaint with the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Ethics requesting an investigation of U.S. Senators Max Baucus and Jon Tester” saying the two U.S. Senators engaged in “improper conduct reflecting poorly on the Senate.”
The local CBS news station picked up the story HERE.
I know I am going way out on a limb here, but I doubt this complaint gets very far.
Montana’s U.S. House Race:
The Associated Press published a story about the Democrats vying for Montana lone seat in the U.S. House of Representatives writing, “A large Democratic field running for Congress faces a difficult task: First survive a crowded primary battle, and then retake a seat Democrats haven’t won in 18 years.”
The June 5 primary has a couple of interesting races – the Democrats running for U.S. House and the Republicans running for Governor. Independents will be torn deciding which ballot to use…
Shocking Discovery:
Lee Newspapers reporter Mike Dennison discovered (and reported) that U.S. Senator Jon Tester (Democrat) votes with President Barack Obama 95% of the time. Congressman Denny Rehberg (Republican) does not, but Rehberg voted with President Bush (over Bush’s eight year term) 82% of the time.
OMG!
Then Dennison asked the Tester/Rehberg campaign people to comment. Then Dennison asked a political scientist from Montana State University-Billings to comment. Then he wrote about it…and now the Rehberg Campaign and turd third parties can use the story in an advertisement.
Next Monday:
Next Monday (March 12) at 5:00 p.m. (Mountain Time) is the deadline to file for office in Montana, or as the Montana Secretary of State’s website says it is the “last day for candidates to file declarations for Primary Election.”
This last week will be interesting, especially next Monday – you never know who will file for office!
This Just In:
If you have a National Park close to your town, it helps the economy. Read the whole story HERE.
You also get to see wild animals…
Rush Limbaugh apologizes:
The Associated Press reported, “Conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh apologized Saturday to a Georgetown University law student he had branded a “slut” and “prostitute” after fellow Republicans as well as Democrats criticized him and several advertisers left his program.”
Limbaugh is so 1990s…but conservative columnist George Will believes “Republican leaders are afraid of Rush Limbaugh.”
I think the Republican leaders are also afraid of their own shadows…
Super Tuesday:
It’s tomorrow (March 6). Yawn. Here are the states: Alaska, Georgia, Idaho, Massachusetts, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia.
$200 Million:
McClatchy Newspapers reported that “Since first setting eyes on the White House, Mitt Romney and his backers have spent more than $200 million — including $44.6 million of his fortune — on a seven-year quest for the Republican presidential nomination.”
Filthy rich does not fit Mitt Romney – he is ultra rich. But even with all that money, he is probably going to lose…
Veterans Health Care:
The Associated Press (AP) published a story over the weekend writing, “Two years after Congress passed a high-profile law to improve health care for military veterans, lawmakers and advocates are again raising alarms that the sprawling Department of Veterans Affairs is not expanding help for the nation’s former fighters and their families as quickly or widely as intended.”
It’s really past time that the national leaders looked at allowing veterans to use local clinics, hospitals, and even mental health services with the Feds paying for it. Very little travel costs. No money for buildings, etc., and care closer to home…
