Caught My Eye…

Congratulations on making it to another Friday!

Today is kind of a sad day and many Montanans have heavy hearts because Montana’s Walter Breuning, the world’s oldest man, died yesterday. He was 114 years-old. I actually met Walter a couple of times and found him to be a very nice person. Walter was a celebrity and stories were written about him from all around the world. Unfortunately, a few politicians used him to get attention. RIP Walter!

This week I take a look at a new band, toddlers drinking, failure on cable news, bridges, and the messages in my political inbox!

For folks visiting for the first time, Caught My Eye is a weekly column posted on Friday mornings where I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to comment about during the week – and sometimes I add a little sarcasm!

So sit back and enjoy another edition of Caught My Eye…

New Rock Band:

269,000 viewers have enjoyed watching the video of “Don’t Brush My Hair in Knots” and you probably will, too. Click HERE.

Alcohol and Toddlers:

We’ve seen a couple stories about Olive Garden and Applebee’s accidently serving alcohol to toddlers. Way back in 2007, I commented about the same thing that happened with Applebee’s.

Deer in Headlights:

The communications “professional” working for an elected official is supposed to prepare their boss when they get their big “interview” on the #3 cable news network. The “boss” is supposed to take their few minutes of “free air time” and run with it. Let’s just say that Senator Jon Tester and his media/communications team failed big time during this interview. Also, please straighten your tie senator…

MetraPark:

For those out-of-state readers, MetraPark is an indoor facility in Billings, Montana, that is used for concerts, conventions, etc. It was hit by a tornado last summer and has recently re-opened and there is talk of renaming it. See story HERE.

Since Montana does not have a large enough arena to be a stopping point for major concerts, my idea for a name is: NotLargeEnoughPark.

Don’t Cross the Bridge:

A new report stated that 391 bridges in Montana were structurally deficient. Amazing. Montana’s “powerful” Senator Max Baucus touts that he played a key role in writing and passing the 1998 and 2005 Highway Bills and he is equally proud of the fact that he is the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Transportation and Infrastructure – the panel that writes the Federal Highway Bill…

All together now: “Com’on man!”

Spending:

There has been a lot of talk from Washington about cutting spending, especially after Rep. Paul Ryan and President Obama’s speeches this week. The fact is that President Obama (and the Democrats in the House and Senate) has added more to national debt in first 19 months than all Presidents from Washington through Reagan (combined).

Ain’t that some sh…

Jobs/Jobs/Jobs:

While Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer and the Montana Legislators played with their “brands” this week, 33 people in Butte, Montana, lost their jobs. Nice work, folks. Nice work…

Political Inbox:

-When the e-mail from Jim Messina, Campaign Manager for Barack Obama, hit my inbox, I was kind of hoping he was asking if I needed a job, but ol’ Jim just wanted to let me know “The President’s speech today began a new conversation in Washington about how to reduce the deficit while protecting crucial investments in our country’s future.’

Candidate Obama failed to win Montana in 2008; the chances of him winning it in 2012 are even slimmer…and he will even try to carry Jon Tester on his back…and that will be a load…

-Speaking of Jon Tester, he sent me an e-mail with the subject, “A victory for Montana management of our wolf population” saying “Today, Congress approved my responsible plan to remove gray wolves in Montana from the Endangered Species List and return their management to the state.”

Wolves don’t really bother me that much; but I don’t own any livestock, but I am thinking about getting some urban chickens! Wasn’t there some anti-gun language in the bill that Jon Tester and Max Baucus supported?

-The Democratic National Committee (DNC) sent me an e-mail with the subject “Privatize Medicare?” in which they try to say Republicans want to abolish “…Medicare to pay for more tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires and slashes investments in energy, education, and infrastructure.”

This is more of the same old same old scare tactics. We need to stop spending so much money. If we really want to get out of this mess, then everyone will have to feel some pain…

-Not to be out done, the Republican National Committee (RNC) sent an e-mail saying, “Today, President Obama proposed trillions in new taxes to bankroll the liberal Democrats’ big government policies at a time when our economy is still struggling, gas prices are soaring and unemployment is still alarmingly high.”
