It’s the Christmas Edition of the (almost) award winning weekly column, “Caught My Eye.” This is where I take a look at some of the stories that I did not have to comment about during the week – sometimes sarcastically!
First, some breaking news: Congress is no longer in session, so we are all safe until January 5, 2011.
The staff here at The Western Word wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas! By the way, it’s not too late to help those in need this Christmas! Do something today!
A special thank you to all those who are away from home this Christmas protecting us. We miss you and we are praying for your safe return!
A Mother’s Love:
New York Giants defensive end Dave Tollefson has a mother who gives out some tough love. Little Dave was injured and mom met him and the trainers in the locker room. According to Yahoo! Sports, Tollefson’s mother told the trainers and her son:
“Tape it up! I didn’t fly here from California to watch you ride the pines!” Mrs. Crocker said, in a tone that certainly would have made head coach Tom Coughlin proud.
“She was like ‘What are you doing?'” Tollefson told the New York Daily News. “I said, ‘Mom, I’m hurt.’ She said, ‘I don’t give a [expletive]. Get it taped up and get the hell in there! I don’t want to hear this.”

Video of the Week (Runner Up):
In case you missed it, check out this Jimmy Fallon video from the Emmy Awards.
Video of the Week (Winner):
Although I posted this video link earlier this week, it’s worth another look. Besides, nothing much is better than Max Baucus and Jon Tester singing and dancing to Feliz Navidad. Watch HERE. (I did not see Tester’s tractor in the video)
The Political Inbox:
This week there’s been a lot of generic Happy Holidays e-mails. Here are a few that Caught My Eye…
–Senator Jon Tester sent an e-mail from his campaign account with the subject, “Happy Holidays.” He did not mention Christmas…
–Barack Obama sent me one with the subject, “This holiday season, share our progress.” He did not mention Christmas either…
-On December 21, Senator Tester sent out another fundraising e-mail. The subject was “Getting the job done.” Senator Tester is probably getting a lump of coal from the Progressives that supported him in 2006 mostly because of his “No” vote on the Dream Act.
-There were also some e-mails from Barack Obama and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) touting the senate voting to end Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT). I supported the repeal.
Ever wonder how the “poor” college kids who play football can afford all those tattoos? Maybe Ohio State has the answer. Some of the players traded championship rings, jerseys and awards for tattoos. The silliest thing is the players are suspended for the first five games next year (not for the upcoming bowl game). The NCAA is starting to remind me of professional wrestling…they have double standards depending on the school. ESPN has the story HERE.
Is it cool to have a box of wine?
Since you may drink some wine this holiday season, you may not be looked at as a “cheap-o” for buying a box of wine…check out this story.
