There’s some news this Tuesday (that seems like a Monday because of the Labor Day holiday) that a church in Florida plans to hold an “International Burn A Koran Day” on September 11.
The Church, Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida, is reported to have 50 members, but they have made the “big time” with this outrageous plan. They have created an “International Burn A Koran Day” facebook page. Sadly, there are over 8,000 people who “like” the page.
General David Petraeus has said the church’s plan could endanger U.S. troops stationed around the world. I agree.
The church’s website gives readers “Ten Reasons to Burn a Koran” with the opening line saying, “On 9/11/10 we are burning Korans to raise awareness and warn. In a sense it is neither an act of love nor of hate. We see, as we state in the Ten Reasons below, that Islam is a danger.”
They go on to say:
We do not hate any people, however. We love, as God loves, all the people in the world and we want them to come to a knowledge of the truth. To warn of danger and harm is a loving act. God is love and truth. If you know the truth it can set you free. The world is in bondage to the massive grip of the lies of Islam.
In the United States we have freedom of religion and freedom of speech. The Dove World Outreach Center is partaking in both of these freedoms, but they shouldn’t. When the commanding General of the troops in Afghanistan warns of possible retribution by Taliban and that the church’s actions will strengthen the Taliban’s cause against the United States, the Dove World Outreach Center should take note.
As a Christian, I find it disgusting that other Christians would act this way. We’ve seen our share of fruitcakes masquerading as a loving caring church doing what they think God is telling them to do in this country. That’s a freedom we have in the United States. That’s why some churches are more of a business than a place for worship.
I don’t like it when people burn the Bible or the American flag and I am sure that those who believe in Islam feel the same way I do when somebody burns the Koran.
Nobody has the corner on religion in this world. Many of us search throughout our lives to find a peace within from a higher power. Some of us believe in Christianity. Others believe in Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism or other religions – and that’s fine with me.
Throughout life we search for the truth and at the end of life we hope that our beliefs have been correct.
As I have grown into my Christianity, I find it easier to get along with other people whose beliefs differ from mine. My actions as a Christian speak louder than words and the actions that the Dove World Outreach Center is planning to take on September 11 will harm America and harm Christianity.
I’ll be praying that the Dove World Outreach Center leaders receive a clear message from God – and that they act accordingly. I hope you will, too.

I’m a little torn on this issue.
I think what they’re doing is stupid and only done to cause controversy.
As a bibliophile, I think the burning of any book is horrible. (Unless you’re trapped somewhere and need kindling for a fire.)
But I am a firm believer in freedom of speech. And as long as these Korans belong to the people who set them on fire, and they aren’t breaking any laws about open flames and such, I think they’re well within their rights to do it.
That’s the pain about rights. Even idiotic people need to have them.
Good points. Thanks for stopping by. -Jack
