Today is Friday, so it is time to take a quick look at some of the things that “Caught My Eye” during the week that I did not have time to comment about.
Today I offer my commentary about News Corp., Dr. Laura, silly stimulus comments, a new BFF, suckered reporting, and Roger Clemens. Enjoy!
News Corp./Fox News:
The parent company of Fox News (News Corp.) must have done something really big this week because I received three e-mails from Democrats telling me how terrible they were. They told me that News Corp. had donated $1 million to the Republican Governors Association. OMG!!! Of course, they sprinkled it in with the “Fair and Balanced” motto of Fox News.
The rest of the story (according to the Washington Post) is that they are not the only media company that donates to political parties:
It is hardly unusual for media companies to support candidates and political parties. General Electric, which owns NBC, has given $245,000 to the Democratic governors and $205,000 to the Republican governors since last year.
Disney, which owns ABC, donated $20,000 to committees associated with Republicans and $11,000 to Democratic committees. CBS gave $13,000 to Democratic PACs and $1,000 to Republican ones.
At least News Corp. did not do business with Iran.
Dr. Laura:
Dr. Laura Schlessinger has decided to quit radio after using the “N” word repeatedly (11 times in five minutes by some accounts) during a recent broadcast. The next day she apologized. A few days later she said she was leaving radio and gave this reason:
…I want to regain my First Amendment rights. I want to be able to say what is on my mind.
OK?
On Wednesday, former Alaska governor Sarah Palin came to the rescue defending Schlessinger’s free speech rights telling her “don’t retreat, reload.”
And I thought Palin would “refudiate” the remarks made by Schlessinger…
We do have the right of free speech to use the “N” word. Those hearing someone use the “N” word also have the right to voice their disapproval. It is wrong to use that word to make a point no matter if you are a radio talk show host or rapper.
Stimulus = No jobs:
The Great Falls Tribune ran with a story about Montana being in third place for recovery (stimulus) money. You can read it here.
The most interesting point made was by Senator Tester’s mouthpiece when he said:
Jon supported the Recovery Act because it’s creating jobs rebuilding rural America and Montana’s economy.
Where? In January 2007 (the date Tester took office) the unemployment rate in Montana was 4.3%. In June 2010, the rate was 7.2% (not seasonally adjusted).
For the United States in January 2007 (the date Tester took office), the unemployment rate was 5%. In June 2010, the rate was 9.6% (not seasonally adjusted).
Here’s the SOURCE.
We won’t even mention how much further in debt the country is because of the stimulus.
By the way, wasn’t the stimulus supposed to keep the national unemployment rate below 8%?
Tester: Please Help My New BFF:
I received a campaign e-mail from Senator Tester asking for donations for his BFF, Dennis McDonald. Tester said that we need McDonald:
…because the guy we’ve got in there now keeps saying no to investing in clean energy, helping our returning vets find housing, fixing our schools — pretty much everything.
Having Dennis in the delegation would bring more Montana common sense to Washington. And that’s why I’m reaching out to all my friends to help send Dennis to Washington.
That’s all we need – three guys in the Washington delegation who hide from constituents when the going gets tough.
I think our current Congressman, Denny Rehberg, could probably whip both McDonald and Tester and have votes left over if the race were held today.
Breaking News?
Sometimes you have to feel for the reporters in Montana. OK, not really, but it was pretty sad that the reporter (and probably the News Director) got suckered in to reporting this story.
A great question for the MEA-MFT would have been: “When was the last time you endorsed a Republican for a state-wide office?” Bueller…Bueller…
Roger Clemens:
Roger Clemens was indicted this week for perjury and making false statements. When he testified before Congress in 2008, I commented that it was a waste of time and money for the idiots on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, led by Henry Waxman, to devote this much attention to Major League Baseball when unemployment is so high, two wars were being fought, and our country was in such sad shape with the new leadership.
I’ve thought a lot about that commentary since the news came out that Clemens was indicted, and it STILL IS a waste of time and money to go after Clemens.

“Independent Commentary about Politics, Sports, and Current Events” INDEPENDENT – don’t you feel that you are being dishonest by using this word when it is obvious you are a voice box for the republican party.
Obvious- Nope. If you read this blog enough, you’ll see that I also pick on the Republicans as well. Recently, the Democrats have been in charge and screwed things up so they get the most ink. Thanks for reading TWW and commenting. -Jack
Pretty nice post. I just stumbled upon your blog and wanted to say that I have really enjoyed browsing your blog posts. In any case I’ll be subscribing to your feed and I hope you write again soon!
It was quite controversial when the MEA snubbed one of its own — Chet Blaylock, who was a teacher for 30 years — for Racicot.
I would imagine it was – thanks for the information, -Jack
