Thursday Numbers

When I checked my weather app this morning, it said it was minus 32 here at the world headquarters of The Western Word in Great Falls, Montana. That was not counting wind chill.

We made it to February – now if we can just make it to spring and get through this cold weather! By the way, Major League Baseball’s spring training starts soon!

If you are a first-time visitor, “Thursday Numbers” is the column where I take a look at the numbers that are in the news (in descending order) and provide commentary (sometimes spiked with a little sarcasm).

This week I write about ObamaCare, the winter Olympics, unemployment, Seattle Seahawks, CVS, Jason Priest & Montana DOJ, Steve Daines’ job interview, The Biggest Loser, the Montana National Guard, graduation rate, Tom Brokaw, the farm bill, Denver Broncos, barefoot driver, Montana At- Large, and much more!

Thursday Numbers

Welcome! January is moving right along and that’s a good thing! As always, thanks for taking time out of your busy day to read “Thursday Numbers.”

If you are a first-time visitor, this is the column where I take a look at the numbers that are in the news (in descending order) and provide commentary (sometimes spiked with a little sarcasm).

This week I write about the omnibus spending bill, lost money, unemployment, tased and confused in Bozeman, Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, mile marker 420, a woman president, millionaires in congress, Rep. Steve Daines, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, cheaters at Malmstrom AFB, Colin Kaepernick, Russell Wilson, the government is the problem, military retirement benefits, Jim Harbaugh, Guantanamo Bay, and much more!

“Golden Tate 24 Yd Pass From Russell Wilson”

The Green Bay Packers played a horrible game (especially in the first half), but appeared they would pull out a close win against the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football.

Until the last play.

The official scoring summary will read “Golden Tate 24 Yd Pass From Russell Wilson (Steven Hauschka Kick).”

Final: Seahawks 14, Packers 12.

What happened on that scoring play was that Seattle wide receiver Golden Tate pushed a Green Bay defender out of the way and wrestled with safety M.D. Jennings for the ball. Seattle was awarded a touchdown on the final play. With that touchdown, the hatred for replacement referees peaked (especially in Cheesehead world).

Both players had their hands on the ball and Jennings looked like he had the most control with two hands on the ball. The consensus around the country is that it was an interception and not a touchdown and that it was a terrible call.

Of course, the closest referee looking down at the players on the ground had a better angle for the play. After seeing most of the replays, I did not see a replay where one could see the ball through the whole play. Mike Tirico calling the game for ESPN said the catch was “simultaneous.” Continue reading

2011 NFL Predictions: The National Football Conference

Last season the NFC’s Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl and put away the “Favre curse” once and for all.  So, the Packers get to start the regular season on Thursday, September 8 (8:30 Eastern) by hosting the New Orleans Saints.  Kid Rock, Lady Antebellum, and Maroon 5 will help “kick off” the season (at 7:30 Eastern).  It’s on NBC.

This just in:  President Obama will give a speech that night, too.

The Philadelphia Eagles are the Miami Heat of the NFL.  There will be much love and much hate for the Eagles this season, but one thing for sure is that Michael Vick is loving his second $100 million contract of this lifetime.  There are questions about him staying healthy, but just about every NFL team will see a drop-off in their offense if their starting QB goes down.

So I’ve read the stories, checked the schedules, read what the teams and the fans are saying and here are my predictions for the National Football Conference for the 2011 season. Remember – your team is undefeated right now! Continue reading

Just Football…

So how did you do in your football picks this season? In the Sirius Satellite Radio’s Pigskin Pick ‘em, I finished 1315 out of 10,204 players, which was terrible. Oh well, maybe I can win a pizza from the Papa John’s contest during the playoffs…

So now the football games we’ll get to see have a little more meaning. We have the NFL’s wildcard weekend and a couple of big college games coming up. This weekend is going to be a good one for football fans!

A Real National Champion…

To get us football fans started this weekend this Friday afternoon/night we’ll get to see a real National Champion crowned as Eastern Washington University (EWU) (12-2) plays Delaware (12-2) for the FCS National Championship. That game is set to be televised on ESPN2 at 5:00 p.m. Montana time. The game is played in Frisco, Texas (close to Dallas-Fort Worth).

It seems like forever ago when these teams played in the semi-finals. Eastern last played December 17 and Delaware played December 18. EWU played in the semifinals without All-American running back Taiwan Jones because of a broken foot and word is that Jones will not play Friday night.

I still like EWU’s chances in this game.

…and a Mythical National Champion: Continue reading
