The Sunday Message

You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.Matthew 7:5

I was listening to Air1 (a Christian radio station) the other day during my daily walk. They have a segment called “59 Seconds of Hope” in which one of three pastors gives a mini sermon. You can see the “59 Seconds of Hope” page HERE.

I’m probably not the typical Air1 listener (I am probably older than most) but I listen to it when I walk. I love their music. I think these “Hope” segments are pretty neat and with only 59 seconds they have to be to the point. Besides, it’s 2015 and don’t we deserve to have our sermons condensed down to about a minute so we can get on with life?

These “Hope” segments are all pretty good, but one stuck in my mind. One of the pastors talked about some Christians being snobs or snobbish. I don’t think Air1 archives the segments, but I wish they did so I could point you to it.

While I was walking I was saying, “He’s right – some Christians are snobs.” If you look up the word “snob” on the website you will find this definition:

[A] person who believes himself or herself an expert or connoisseur in a given field and is condescending toward or disdainful of those who hold other opinions or have different tastes regarding this field.

Snob is also closely related to the word hypocrite which is mentioned several times in the Bible.

I bet you know some Christians who fit the definition. I know some people, even Pastors, who believe that they have all the truth cornered about God, Jesus, and the Bible – and what they believe is fact. If you dare to disagree, watch out because here comes the snobbery…

These are the same people who years ago would have told you the world was flat.

The hypocrites in the church are the people who are giving churches, Christianity, and religion a bad name. There are literally millions of people who have turned away from God and don’t attend church because of hypocrites in the church.

The answer to this problem is simple. Love one another. Don’t judge. Be a friend.

If people see you following these three things, they will probably want to know your secret…
