Thursday Numbers

It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see. – Henry David Thoreau

Welcome to “Thursday Numbers!” In case you’re a first-time visitor, this is the weekly column where I take a look at the numbers that are in the news (in descending order) and provide commentary sometimes sprinkled with just a little bit of sarcasm.

This week’s topics include unemployment, grants, University of Montana, wind, pay raises, Larry King, Syrian refugees, Jared Fogle, the NBA, DraftKings and FanDuel, college football playoff rankings, the NFL, plus a lot more!

Changes in the Empire?

Fox News pretty much controls cable news, but there might be a crack in their armor. O’Reilly, Hannity, and Van Susteren pretty much destroy the competition in the evening on cable news. Even the replays of their earlier shows later in the evening normally beat the competition soundly.

So why tinker with a successful thing? Some believe Fox News is losing the all-important viewers between the ages of 25-54 and that is the reason for the change.

Fox News lost me years ago.

It appears that Fox News star Megyn Kelly is moving to primetime and will possibly take over the 9 p.m. (eastern) slot currently occupied by Sean Hannity. Nobody really knows where Hannity will go. I suspect that Van Susteren will move to another spot in the day, and Hannity will take her slot, but that is just my idea. It would make sense to put Kelly in between O’Reilly and Hannity. It would be a ratings bonanza for Kelly. Maybe Fox News needs more moderation during that time. Kelly would be more moderate than Hannity.   Continue reading

Caught My Eye…

It’s Friday, so it is time for another edition of Caught My Eye! This weekly column takes a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week – sometimes with just a little sarcasm!

Here we are in the midst of the Christmas season! Like most men, my shopping has not started yet. I like to wait until about December 24 so it’s more of a challenge! Normally on Christmas Eve, we men hit the stores like we are getting ready to ascend Mount Everest and get all our shopping done in a few hours.

Then we come home and ask questions like, “Honey, where’s the tape?” or “Do we have wrapping paper?”

It’s not too late to get into the Christmas spirit. In the last couple of weeks, I attended some Christmas programs to get me in the spirit. The local school programs I attended were wonderful!

Also, there’s nothing like a walk through the local mall to get me in the Christmas Spirit – you can also scope out some items when you return on Christmas Eve to do your shopping…and sneak a peek inside Victoria’s Secret…

Don’t forget to give to those less fortunate this season. Times are tough so if you have a little extra this year, share it – buy some meals for folks at your local rescue mission, drop some cash in the red kettles, buy an extra toy and donate it to Toys for Tots. You’ll feel better for it!

Everybody deserves a nice Christmas!

So now, sit back, relax, and enjoy this week’s edition of Caught My Eye… Continue reading
