If you were born from 1946 to 1964, you may not want to read this.
Life is on the downhill slope. We are over the hill. The best times are over.
We are just circling the drain my baby boomer friends. Your knees hurt. Your back has a catch in it. The neck hurts. You can’t read the scores of the games on TV any more. Staying up past 11:00 pm is a big event. Your hair is turning gray or you lost your hair somewhere. The cute young lady at your favorite restaurant asked if you wanted the senior citizen discount. The only way you can get carded these days when buying alcohol is when you write a check. Yes it sucks and it is not going to get any better.
The first boomer applied for Social Security benefits this week. There are about 80 million of us in the same boat. It makes you want to drink, doesn’t it? Kegger anyone?
As we approach those “golden years” we have to understand that life might not be too golden for us. There’s not enough money in the Social Security account to give us benefits. It is slated to go broke around 2041.
There’s a good chance I’ll be dead by then. Another funny thing is many of the folks who are in a position to do something about it will be dead by then, too.
President Bush tried to bring the problem to the nation’s attention a few years ago. He even came to Montana to talk about the problem. But the democrats, led by Max Baucus (who is not a baby boomer), cried “privatization” and put the fear into the senior citizens. Senior Citizens vote and they don’t want privatization. I think many of then will be dead by then, too.
All I want is a solution…plus to have the pain go away in my right knee.
But there’s some good news (no, I did not save a bunch of money of car insurance). Baby boomers are still contributing to society and some are even playing games!
Over the weekend, I watched Vinny Testaverde quarterback the Carolina Panthers to a win in NFL football. He’s a baby boomer. Last night I watched 47-year-old Morton Anderson of the Atlanta Falcons kick a 47 yard field goal. Anderson is a baby boomer.
OK, so there are probably some baby boomers who are doing a little more to contribute to society than playing a game. Maybe.
To close this post, I leave you with a quote from the 1993 movie, “Dazed and Confused” which ironically seems to closely portray my life back in the good ol’ 70s:
“The older you get, the more rules they are going to try and get you to follow. You just gotta keep on livin’, man. L-I-V-I-N.”
– David Wooderson (played by Matthew McConaughey)
Now get back to circling the drain.
