The Monday Memo

Welcome! Here is a look at what I’m breaking down in today’s common sense session:

  • Messing Around
  • For Planning Purposes

2026 CAMPAIGN NEWS:

A total of 219 candidates have filed for office in Montana as of Sunday evening, per the Secretary of State’s online registry.

Candidate filing in Montana ends on March 4, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. The Primary election in Montana is Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

MESSING AROUND:

Apparently, Great Falls Mayor Cory Reeves and Great Falls City Commissioner Rick Tryon had some issues recently and decided to share them with their followers on Facebook.

On February 19, Reeves posted the following:

Thank you to our local law enforcement, the Great Falls Police Department and the Cascade County Sheriff’s Office, for responding to our home this evening. Someone chose to bang on our garage door, startling my entire family.

Last month, we had a drone hovering over our residence and looking into our windows. That is unacceptable.

If you have an issue with me, take it up with me directly. Leave my family out of it. They deserve to feel safe and protected in their own home. Disagreements in public service are one thing. Intimidating a family at their residence is another.

I will always stand firm when it comes to protecting my family, no matter the cost for me.

Reeves appears to be under the impression that these events happened simply because he is Mayor.

Tryon claims that someone “who didn’t like a couple of city commission actions I have taken” stole his coat—with keys in the pocket—from the Gibson Room in the Great Falls Civic Center. They put his coat in a garbage can. It was all caught on camera, and he says, “Charges have been filed and that person is now going to be held accountable for petty theft.”

Pro Tip: Keep your keys on your body.

Their MAGA followers were all very sympathetic to these local officials. I imagine there are incidents like these across Great Falls every day. We should not harass the families of the elected officials, and we should not steal their property.

Whether in my personal life or during my tenure in the U.S. Senate, I have repeatedly faced a few threats—not just against myself, but against the safety of my family.  I never thought going public with them would help. Why validate them? Publicizing it just turns their noise into a headline and gives them exactly the attention they’re thirsty for.

FOR PLANNING PURPOSES:

Since the U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) ruled Friday that President Donald Trump cannot unilaterally impose sweeping tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), the Tuesday night State of the Union (SOTU) address may be more of an “airing of grievances” (like Festivus) instead of the typical SOTU. It will be interesting to see which Supreme Court Justices show up and how Trump treats them. When the decision was released, Trump acted like a three-year-old who did not get his way. There are some rumors that some Democrats may boycott the SOTU, which is bullshit in my opinion. Be a grown-up and attend the event.

There may be further SCOTUS decisions this week, starting on Tuesday.

Reminder: The government is still partially shut down.

Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are scheduled to testify this week as part of a House Oversight Committee investigation into Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. The former Secretary will testify on Thursday, and the former President will testify on Friday.

OLYMPICS END:

The Winter Olympics have ended. I was very proud to see the U.S. Women’s Hockey team and the U.S. Men’s Hockey team take home gold medals.

I was also very proud seeing USA Figure Skater Alysa Liu win gold in the women’s singles. She also took gold in the team event. This is the first gold medal for a USA skater in women’s singles since 2002.

ONE MORE THING:

You have two hands. One to help yourself, the second to help others.

## HAVE A GREAT WEEK ##
