Caught My Eye…

Welcome to Friday! Here are the topics that caught my eye for this column:

  • Cruisin’ The Drag Car Show
  • Religious Public Charter School
  • Montana Legislature Theme
  • The Kentucky Derby
  • One More Thing

CRUISIN’ THE DRAG CAR SHOW:

It’s time for the Cruisin’ The Drag Car Show in Great Falls. The actual car show is Saturday (May 3) from 10:00-3:00 on Central Avenue in Great Falls, but there are other events all weekend.

RELIGIOUS PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL:

From what I have read, the U.S. Supreme Court appears to be leaning toward allowing Oklahoma to approve the first-ever religious public charter school, although SCOTUSBlog.com reports:

The Supreme Court on Wednesday was divided over a Catholic virtual charter school’s bid to become the country’s first religious charter school. With Justice Amy Coney Barrett recused from the case, the outcome appeared to hinge on the vote of Chief Justice John Roberts, who asked probing questions of both sides but did not make his position clear.

In case you forgot, the First Amendment to the Constitution says:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

As NBC News reported

While the Establishment Clause prohibits state endorsement of religion or preference for one religion over another, the Free Exercise Clause outlaws religious discrimination.

I don’t see where allowing a religious public charter school would be the state promoting a religion, as long as other religions were allowed to do the same.

I have always felt that churches should stay out of politics. Churches should encourage their members to vote and to pray for all of our elected leaders.

There are many religions in this country, and allowing other religions to do the same might lead to bigger problems down the road.

This decision will be interesting.

MONTANA LEGISLATURE THEME:

With all the talk and anger about the recently completed session of the Montana Legislature, here is my nomination for the theme song for the session:

You can’t always get what you want

You can’t always get what you want

You can’t always get what you want

But if you try sometimes, well, you might find

You get what you need (Source)

THE KENTUCKY DERBY:

In case you forgot, the 151st Kentucky Derby is this Saturday (May 3). There are 20 horses entered in the race. I have heard that a horse named “Journalism” is one of the favorites.

The current post time is 6:57 p.m. ET.  NBC will cover the event starting at 2:30 ET.

ONE MORE THING:

A good woman is by your side during bad times to tell you that none of this would’ve happened if you had just listened to her. (Source)
