The Wednesday Read

Welcome! Here are the topics for today’s common sense commentary:

  • Montana Legislature Circus
  • Afraid to Meet With Us
  • The MAGA Cult
  • Bernie & AOC in Missoula
  • One More Thing

MONTANA LEGISLATURE CIRCUS:

If you are like me, you can’t wait for the Montana Legislature to end. It’s mostly been a circus with clowns running around making life harder for Montanans.

One of the recent pieces of legislation deals with “Red Flag” laws.

MTN News reports:

The Montana Legislature has passed legislation preventing local governments from enacting laws to remove firearms from people who are considered a danger to themselves or others, also known as Red Flag laws.

MTN News also explained “Red Flag” Laws:

Red Flag Laws allow for extreme risk protection orders, which are intended as a way for law enforcement to temporarily remove firearms from a person if a judge decides there is a high risk of harm.

This bill is a bullshit excuse to protect Second Amendment rights.

Then a few days ago the Montana Free Press (MTFP) reported that the Montana Senate on cast the final vote approving a bill restricting public schools from taking action against students or staff who decline to use the preferred names or pronouns of other individuals — a move supporters have framed as a protection against compelled speech but opponents have criticized as damaging to transgender students. The controversial proposal now passes to Republican Gov. Greg Gianforte for his signature or veto.

This is silliness. Those same feelings were echoed by State Senator Cora Neumann.

The MTFP reported:

The effort, Bozeman Democratic Sen. Cora Neumann, argued, has distracted the Legislature from focusing on property tax relief and other critical issues facing Montanans.

“This is a mean, cruel bill,” Neumann said. “We heard earlier in the session, every bill draft costs us $3,000, every day in this legislative body costs the state of Montana $40,000. We have heard 25 anti-trans, anti-LGBTQ bills. What are we doing here? This is not our job. This is not what the people of Montana asked for. This is horrible.”

AFRAID TO MEET WITH US:

U.S. Senator Tim Sheehy (R-MT) recently talked to Miles City High School students about how he was able to drink overseas at 19 years old and the difference in the taste of vodka, among other exciting things. (Source)

Meanwhile, MTN News reported:

Outside the event, protesters supported by the group Indivisible gathered to address concerns, including federal budget cuts by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), hoping for face time with Sheehy.

Mary Catherine Dunphy, who helped organize the demonstration, criticized Sheehy for not engaging with the group. “He should be talking to us. We don’t bite,” said Dunphy. “I understand he’s a former Navy SEAL and you have to be kind of a tough guy to be a Navy SEAL — and we don’t know why he’s afraid to meet with us.”

It was also reported that some parents pulled their students from school over the event, while others noted the importance of hearing different opinions. Multiple community members said students were instructed “not to ask political questions.”

Ol Tim is still dodging questions and avoiding meeting with constituents. Coward!

THE MAGA CULT:

Sad news to report. The MAGA movement is growing. NBC News is reporting that more than one-third of registered voters identified themselves as MAGA supporters in March’s NBC News poll. That includes 71% of Republicans.

NBC News also reported that thirty-six percent of registered voters identified themselves as MAGA supporters in the March NBC News poll. It’s a significant increase from past NBC News polling — up from 23% of respondents in a merged sample of all of NBC News’ polling across 2023 and 27% of respondents in a merged sample of NBC News’ 2024 polling.

The good news is that 64% of the registered voters believe in something other than MAGA. There are also 29% of the Republicans who are using their brain and not following the MAGA cult.

BERNIE & AOC IN MISSOULA:

Don’t forget – The “Fighting Oligarchy: Where We Go From Here with Bernie Sanders in Missoula” is this (TODAY) Wednesday (April 16).
