It’s Friday (TGIF) and time for the weekly column, Caught My Eye! Here are the topics that made today’s column:

SHEEHY – ANOTHER BAD DAY:

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Tim Sheehy is using a unique strategy to try and win his race against three-term incumbent Senator, Jon Tester. Sheehy is running from the media. He won’t do interviews. Sheehy has told so many lies that Donald Trump is probably jealous. Veterans have called him a serial liar. 

NBC News reported this week that Sheehy, a former Navy SEAL running for the Senate in Montana, has said he was discharged from the military for medical reasons because of injuries he sustained on duty, but his discharge paperwork tells a different story.  

It was also reported that the “heavily redacted, two-page document obtained by NBC News indicates that Sheehy voluntarily resigned his commission and does not list any medical condition that forced him out of uniform…”

Then NBC found that Sheehy also submitted a résumé to the Montana Legislature in 2021 that claims he was “medically separated from active duty due to wounds received in Afghanistan.” Was that a lie?

Most candidates would either quit the race or do a press conference to clear up any confusion and set the record straight. I’ve heard from people who follow politics and they believe that Sheehy is ahead in the polls and does not want to do anything to jinx it. We’ll find out in about 12 days how his strategy worked.

UPDATE – THE BALLOT BOX:

Yesterday I wrote about there being a lot of feigned outrage across Montana MAGA land when a video caught a man touching a ballot box in Glacier County. 

I saw the video and the first thing I thought was, “Is that all?” 

The Montana Secretary of State’s office identified the individual in the footage as Laszlo Gendler, who has been employed by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC). He was supposedly sent there to see how secure the ballot box was. (Source)

In an update, MTN News reports:

Gendler was subsequently brought in for questioning by the Glacier County Sheriff’s Office.

Glacier County Undersheriff Tom Seifert told MTN that the investigation was completed promptly and that all circumstantial evidence was unfounded.

No charges were pressed and Gendler was released.

Glacier County Attorney Terryl Matt said, “After a review of the evidence, including the footage, we have determined that the issue is unsubstantiated. The behavior captured in the video does not constitute a legitimate attempt to tamper with the ballot box or the electoral process. Glacier County takes all potential instances of election tampering seriously and investigate them to ensure the integrity of our democratic process.”

No charges. Circumstantial evidence was unfounded. The issue is unsubstantiated. Does not constitute a legitimate attempt to tamper with the ballot box or the electoral process. 

Just like I said yesterday, it was a nothingburger. The MAGAs got their panties in a wad over nothing. 

MITCH MCCONNELL:

CNN reports that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell delivered a scathing assessment of the modern Republican Party in an upcoming biography, saying the “MAGA movement is completely wrong” and that Ronald Reagan “wouldn’t recognize” the party today.

Mitch is about 10 years late in his assessment. By the way, I supported Reagan and even provided perimeter security for him when I was stationed at Whiteman AFB, MO. I think Trump ruined the Republican party and I don’t want any part of it.  

As for his views on Donald Trump, McConnell said:

The Kentucky Republican did not mince words, calling Trump a “sleazeball,” a “narcissist” and saying that the former president is “stupid as well as being ill-tempered.” He added that Trump is “not very smart, irascible, nasty, just about every quality you would not want somebody to have.”

I guess it’s better late than never.

  2. Absolutely great to letter editor on Shady Sheehy, “hero.” It’s how every Vietnam Vet I know feels. Shady is a pathetic excuse for a vet in many ways as this excellent letter points out. Sumthin’ real wrong with the guy. Being a liar and a abject braggart are far from Montana values. He will bring dishonor to Montana. That we don’t need! (Scroll past the ads to see the letter.)

    • Thank you for posting that letter. Mick is a real stand up guy. I don’t agree with most of his politics but sure agree with him on this. I don’t know how any veteran could vote for him.
      Everone should see that letter.
      it was a sad day when Mick had to close his boot store in Uptown Butte.

      • Mick was recommended by Conrad Burns to President Bush as Small Business Administrator for Region 8. He held that position for about eight years.

        I think it was great that Conrad made the nomination. I didn’t know that.

  3. Hmm. I wondered who was responsible for the current defecation on our state’s political scene! Smells like a jr. trump dump!

  4. Liars gonna lie! And Shady Sheehy is the master! But when he lies ON the radio in an interview, it’s pretty hard to scrunch that into something resembling the truth when it’s in his own words. One would think that Shady had figured out by now that continual lying is not the best way to endear yourself to Montanans, especially when he’s lying about selling off our public lands again.
