Thursday Thoughts

Welcome! There’s a lot to write about today – here are the topics for today’s column:

  • Public Opinion Strategies
  • Montana AG Austin Knudsen
  • Flathead Warming Center
  • One More Thing

PUBLIC OPINION STRATEGIES:

The Montana GOP is promoting a new poll showing that all its statewide candidates are leading in their races. Some Republicans are leading by a lot.

The closest race is Republican Tim Sheehy leading incumbent Democrat Jon Tester, 51% to 45%.

There are two things I noticed. First, Public Opinion Strategies is a Republican polling firm. They contend:

“For nearly three decades, Public Opinion Strategies has been the most trusted polling firm for Republican candidates across the country and at all levels of government.”

Secondly, the poll seems to have polled more Republicans. Toward the end, they ask,  “And, in politics today, do you consider yourself … a Republican, a Democrat, or something else?”

The overall answer is 47% TOTAL REPUBLICAN 32% TOTAL DEMOCRAT.

That’s a 15% difference.

I have taken many polls this season. I do not believe this company has polled me.

By the way, Wednesday was a record-breaking day. I received 10 mailers/fliers in my mailbox. Is this a great country or what?

Nonetheless, check out the poll HERE

MONTANA AG AUSTIN KNUDSEN:

As the Montana Free Press (MTFP) so eloquently put it, Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen “faces 41 counts alleging that he or his Department of Justice attorneys violated the state judicial system’s rules of professional conduct in 2021 while representing the Legislature in a subpoena-power battle with the judiciary.”

So they had a hearing in Helena with the Commission on Practice. It was kind of a trending topic on social media under #MTPol.

The Daily Montanan reported that the Commission on Practice is the five-member panel charged with determining whether the state’s top attorney will face any disciplinary action for his role in the controversy, part of 41 counts of professional misconduct Knudsen faces as a Montana attorney. Those counts stem from a grievance, and then complaint, filed in September 2023.

I don’t know what will be decided, and I don’t really care. If he is found to have committed 41 counts of professional misconduct, then he would be ahead of his hero, Donald Trump, 41-34 (Trump’s are felony convictions). Knudsen was not going to get my vote anyway. I voted for Jon Bennion in the 2020 primary. He would have made a better AG. I think Knudsen has wasted a lot of taxpayer money filing lawsuits, many against the Biden Administration. I think most of them were just to get his name in the news and to appease his MAGA base.

You can read some reports about this HERE, HERE, and HERE

FLATHEAD WARMING CENTER:

The Flathead Warming Center’s mission is to save lives, link people to resources, and encourage dignity through low-barrier access to a warm safe place for those in need.

The Kalispell City Council by a 6-3 vote on Sept. 16, 2024, revoked the warming shelter’s permit to operate. Shame on them. I think the people on the council must be MAGAs.

According to the Daily Montana, the complaint alleges the City Council used a “sham” decision process in the revocation, deciding to adopt a resolution to take away the permit without first completing the resolution (it had “numerous blanks to be filled out”) or providing it as part of its agenda, the lawsuit said.

In my opinion, the Great Falls City Commission does not care about the homeless population, either. Maybe Kalispell is copying?

I hope the Flathead Warming Center wins its lawsuit and that its award is substantial. We need to help homeless people and prevent them from freezing when it’s cold.

ONE MORE THING:

Back in 2015-16, I will admit that it was kind of funny to see Donald Trump put some of the stuffy Republicans in their place. He said things to them that were nasty and never heard of in public about the other candidates for President.

Many of these candidates did not have enough guts to stand up to Trump and when they saw he was going to win, they kissed his ass to keep their political jobs or get one. I don’t like chickenshit politicians like Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Ben Carson, and Mike Huckabee.

JD Vance is Trump’s running mate and he said some nasty things about Trump, but now he has kissed his ass for a chance at power. Vance is just another gutless politician.

Besides saying Trump was America’s Hitler, he posted on Twitter,

“Trump makes people I care about afraid. Immigrants, Muslims, etc. Because of this I find him reprehensible. God wants better of us.” (Source

I agree. God wants better of us. That is why Trump should never be President again.

  1. Pretty accurate description I’d say judging by the antics of our local MAGAs who accidentally got themselves elected. Just look at the election office fiasco and our two flinging commissioners representing the GOP, Grand Old Poo party! Guess that flinging poo is a poor substitute for actual good governance ‘cause one flinger was soundly defeated, and the other is furiously flinging a failed safety budget! We tried chaos, and it wasn’t an improvement.

“If Harris wins, democracy and respect for individual rights and the rule of law will continue,” Wilson wrote. “If Trump wins, it will be chaos monkeys flinging poo everywhere.”

  2. My ‘public opinion’ says that Polls are worthless.

I roll my eyes real hard whenever I see a poll … for any side.

Every side is winning and every side is losing … that is … if you were to take polls seriously.
