Thursday Thoughts

Hello! Here are the topics for today’s column:

  • Sheehy Should Apologize
  • Another School Shooting
  • Liz Cheney for Kamala
  • One More Thing

Sheehy Should Apologize:

Several sources, including the Montana Free Press (MTFP), are reporting that Tribal leaders are seeking an apology from Republican U.S. Senate candidate Tim Sheehy for his “racist” remarks about Native Americans and alcohol.

The MTFP reports that both the Rocky Mountain Tribal Leaders Council and the Montana American Indian Caucus described the candidate’s repeated retelling of a tale in which Crow tribal members, allegedly intoxicated at 8 a.m., threw cans of beer at Sheehy’s head while he worked on a reservation ranch. The remarks were recorded.

On Wednesday, an MTN News reporter attempted to speak to Sheehy about this issue, but it looks as though Sheehy was quickly escorted out after the speech and photo op so he could avoid the press and not answer questions. (Source)

Sheehy should apologize for his remarks. Hearing the crowd on the recordings, probably mostly Republicans, laugh after he told the story is disheartening. With all the issues coming up with Sheehy (gunshot, parachute, business) and now his racist remarks, it’s hard to understand why anyone would vote for him.

Another School Shooting:

The Associated Press (AP) is reporting that a 14-year-old student opened fire at a Georgia high school and killed four people on Wednesday.

The AP reports the dead were identified as two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School in Winder, about an hour’s drive from Atlanta. Killed were two other 14-year-olds, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, and instructors Richard Aspenwall and Christina Irimie.

It is being widely reported that the teen shooter had been interviewed after the FBI received anonymous tips in May 2023 about online threats to commit an unspecified school shooting, the agency said in a statement.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been 385 mass shootings in the USA. (Source)  There have been 45 school shootings this year. (Source

In a few days, most of the country will forget about Apalachee High School, except those who experienced the tragedy. That tells a lot about our country.

Liz Cheney for Kamala:

Republican former Rep. Liz Cheney will vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in November, she said during remarks at Duke University, according to audio obtained by CNN.

The former Wyoming congresswoman noted the importance of voting for Harris in states like North Carolina, where she appeared on Wednesday.

She also urged people not to write-in candidates.

“And as a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I have thought deeply about this, and because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, but I will be voting for Kamala Harris,” Cheney said.

Amen to that!

One More Thing:

Tonight is the first game of the 2024 NFL season. As normal, the Super Bowl champion gets to host the first game, so my Kansas City Chiefs will host the Baltimore Ravens.

Last year the Chiefs lost this game but went on to win the Super Bowl. Tonight, the Chiefs will start the long road to win the Super Bowl three times in a row.

Go Chiefs!

  1. This story just gets sadder. Sounds like the kid didn’t have a chance. I have worked with fetal alcohol kids and kids whose parents were drug addicted. It never turns out well. Some can’t be saved because they’re just too far gone. Their brains are cross wired. This is a real tragedy.

    • Imagine the frothing MAGA outrage demanding all sorts of action and heads to roll if this had been an immigrant kid that did this. But no it was just a white kid from a quasi-normal beer-swilling Georgia white family who took an AR-15 to school and killed and wounded classmates and teachers, so it’s nothing today from the MAGAs but, “Oh that’s awful. Thoughts and Prayers! Next.”

  2. No member of the Republican Party of Racists ever apologizes, let alone admits when they are wrong. They have no shame-see tRump at Arlington.

If you don’t condemn what the tRump campaign did there you are a fake patriot, and you left those men and women behind.

  3. Good Morning,

Slightly off topic for today, but the revelation that Russia (and certainly Iran and China) are engaged in paying right wing “influencers” to promote their disruptive talking points against Democratic candidates is being clearly demonstrated on this site.

Your antagonist, Big Swede, reguarly and gleefully spouts those talking points on all manner of subjects. He is, in-fact, the “tool” of the global enemies that he accuses the Democrats of being.

A clear example of both projection and incredible naivitey that is rampant in our state and country. It belies the statement variously ascribed to Upton Sinclair, H. L. Mencken, Huey Long or Sinclair Lewis, that: “When Fascism comes to America, it will wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.”

So, when will Big Swede admit that “MAGA” is actually Fascism exported by the enemies of democracy?

    • I believe the point was that he should apologize for insulting the Crow people, period. Even die hard MAGAs see that sort of behavior as wrong. Don’t they? Unless it really is the party of naked unabashed racism.

      • I have my doubts that die hard MAGAs seeing that behavior as wrong.
This may be the screwup from Sheehy that helps Tester the most. -JmB

      • Sheehy seems to be using the Trump method which is never apologize. A new AARP poll shows him beating Tester by 8 points. The same poll shows Trump winning by 15 points.
That was before the disparaging remarks by Sheehy. It will be interesting to see if there’s movement in the senate poll after this. Maybe Tester has an ace up his sleeve. -JmB

  4. Thank God we’ve possibly got another jagoff navy seal headed to Washington, because the young people in this country are learning what the MAGAs in Montana already know. The best way to get things done is from the barrel of an AR. And who better to wield an AR than an extremely highly trained military man!

Forget about sending people who are highly qualified by virtue of education, experience, temperament and knowledge of the issues. We choose the guy with the gun. Quick and efficient regardless of what the problem is. It’s still the best and sexiest way to resolve a problem. Not a whole lot of brain power or subtlety required. And that’s one lesson our kids are learning well. Gun culture IS American culture! You may not have a pot to whiz in, but by God if you’ve got an AR to fondle, you got freedom! You can be somebody!

Disclaimer: I know what an AR is and does. I carried the very first iteration of an AR, the CAR 15, for a year in Nam. There is no way a fourteen year old should have access to one, especially if the kid is a mental case. Time for some sensible gun laws.
