Caught My Eye…

Happy Friday! Here are the topics for today’s column:

  • Tester Statement on President Biden
  • Gianforte’s Postcards
  • The Trump Speech

TESTER STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT BIDEN:

U.S. Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) took some of the publicity away from the Republican National Convention by announcing that he feels President Biden should not seek re-election to another term.

In a press release sent to The Western Word, Tester said:

“Montanans have put their trust in me to do what is right and it is a responsibility I take seriously. I have worked with President Biden when it has made Montana stronger, and I’ve never been afraid to stand up to him when he is wrong. And while I appreciate his commitment to public service and our country, I believe President Biden should not seek re-election to another term.”

It appears that more and more Democrats are urging Biden to drop out. I think Biden did his job and that was beating Trump. He saved our country. The Democrats should have found another candidate to take up the cause to defeat Trump, but they didn’t. Even if Biden stays in, he faces an uphill battle. I don’t know if there’s another Democrat who can step in at this late date and be competitive.

GIANFORTE’S POSTCARDS:

Former firearms executive and Democratic candidate for Montana Governor Ryan Busse is calling out Governor Greg Gianforte’s for what he says is illegal use of taxpayer-funded “save the date” postcards, sent to hundreds of thousands of Montana voters, in an attempt to benefit Gianforte’s political campaign.

On Thursday, Busse’s campaign filed a formal ethics complaint against Gianforte with the Montana Commissioner of Political Practices. The complaint, online HERE, includes evidence that the Governor’s use of these postcards violates multiple state laws.

You can read more about the complaint HERE.

THE TRUMP SPEECH:

Former President Donald J. Trump formally accepted the Republican presidential nomination Thursday night by giving a speech that lasted 1:32 – that’s one hour and thirty-two minutes!

At the beginning, Trump spoke about the assassination attempt last Saturday by giving a moment-by-moment replay of the attempt. He talked about unity saying, “I am running to be president for all of America, not half of America, because there is no victory in winning for half of America.”

To me, Trump seemed old and tired. His speech after the part about the assassination attempt was poorly delivered and he rambled on and on. As with most Trump speeches, he told some big whoppers and some old whoppers. As Reuters reported, the unity theme soon went out the window.

Reuters has a report about the speech HERE.  The Associated Press has a report HERE.

  1. We’re in a very bad place when you can’t even accurately describe what dear leader has done. That’s big time fascism. I never thought I’d see that in America. And yet if you call it fascism, his cult gets upset and threatens you. Folks really need to read a little history of Germany cerca 1933. His attacks on the press and his threats to fellow Americans are right out of Hitler’s playbook. Next come the brown shirted election deniers to promise chaos and bring the government to a halt. And the MAGAs are too dumb to know that they’re complicit.

We have a presumptive nominee for president facing 88 felony counts, and we are being prevented from even acknowledging it. These are not alternative facts. These are real facts. A candidate for president of the United States is on trial for sending a hush money payment to a porn star to avoid a sex scandal during his 2016 campaign, and then fraudulently disguising those payments in violation of the law. He is also charged with conspiring to overturn the election. He is also charged with stealing classified information, and the jury has already found him liable for rape in a civil court. Yet in this Republican-controlled House, it is okay to talk about the trial, but you have to call it a sham. It is okay to say the jury is rigged, but not that Trump should be held accountable. It is okay to say the court is corrupt, but not Trump is corrupting the rule of law.”

  2. In dealing with senior citizens. I have often noticed that they retreat into repetitive conversations about things they are comfortable with, especially if any sort of dementia is occurring. Trump did just that. Journalists who cover his rallies indicated that his speech last night was just another rally, with all the “same ole, same ole” story lines — Hannibal Lector, sharks, etc. You’re right, he’s old, and failing in many of the same ways Biden may be, but at least Biden still has clarity in his thinking, if not in his speech, and has a grasp of complex issues. I got bored and wasn’t able to stick with Trump’s entire rambling monologue. We’ll see whether this was really the only time he talks about getting wounded.
