Thursday Thoughts

Welcome! There were many topics to choose from for today’s column! Here are the four that I think deserve your attention:

  • Sheehy’s Antisemitic Trope
  • Judicial Nominee
  • 2024 NFL Draft
  • One More Thing

SHEEHY’S ANTISEMITIC TROPE:

HeartlandSignal.com is reporting that in a recent political ad, Montana Republican Senate candidate Tim Sheehy portrayed Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer with marionette puppet strings controlling money, a common antisemitic trope spread by the far right. The ad also claims that Schumer is directing $55 million to Sheehy’s opponent, Sen. Jon Tester (D).

Heartland Signal also reported that the marionette puppet trope is common among right-wing outlets and personalities online and is used to pejoratively describe prominent Jewish figures like Schumer. The offensive conspiracy theory is rooted in a centuries-old stereotype that Jewish people are at the head of a secret cabal that controls society.

I think Sheehy’s 15 minutes of fame has run out. His campaign has been a disaster from the beginning and people are wondering what the real story is about Sheehy. It’s well past time for him to quit the race.

A frequent reader emailed me the other day and wondered if Sheehy was actually a Navy SEAL. He said the way he has been running his campaign, it looks like Sheehy may have been in McHale’s Navy instead of the SEALs.  The older folks will remember that sitcom.

JUDICIAL NOMINEE:

President Joe Biden announced his intent to nominate seven individuals to federal district courts.

One of the seven nominated was Danna Jackson for the United States District Court for the District of Montana. Jackson has been Tribal Attorney for the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes in Pablo, Montana, since 2023. She previously served at the U.S. Department of the Interior as Senior Counselor to the Director of the Bureau of Land Management and then Senior Counselor to the Assistant Secretary for Water and Science from 2021 to 2023. Before that, Ms. Jackson served as Chief Legal Counsel at the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation in Helena, Montana, from 2016 to 2021 and as an Assistant U.S. Attorney and Tribal Liaison in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Montana from 2010 to 2016. Ms. Jackson also worked as a counsel at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP from 2005 to 2010, after serving as a legislative assistant in the United States Senate from 2002 to 2005 and a staff attorney at the National Indian Gaming Commission from 2000 to 2002. She received her J.D. and her B.A. from the University of Montana in 1996 and 1993, respectively. (Source)

The Missoula Current covered the story. U.S. Senator Jon Tester recommended Jackson to the President. It was reported that U.S. Senator Steve Daines was skeptical of the nomination put forth by Tester.

With the way Daines handled finding a candidate to run for U.S. Senate which has been called a disaster by many, I don’t think Daines has any room to be skeptical about any recommendation.

Jackson is highly qualified to be a federal judge.

2024 NFL DRAFT:

Are you ready? The 2024 NFL Draft will take place between Thursday (TODAY) April 25 and Saturday 27, 2024. The action from Detroit will kick off with Round 1 on Thursday, and finish with Rounds 4-7 on Saturday, April 27.

You can watch the draft live on NFL Network, NFL+, ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN Deportes. Tune in at 8 p.m. ET on April 25 to catch all the draft action live.

ONE MORE THING:

After the Senate passed the foreign aid bill that contained the silly language to ban TikTok, I posted part of a story from USA Today on my TikTok page. The headline was, “Congress Passes TikTok sell-or-ban bill, but legal battles remain.”

The post received 1.5k views in less than 24 hours.

Me and my fellow TikTokers are pissed and when this goes to court, I think we will win.

BTW, you can find me on TikTok @bigsky1959.
