MONTANA SUPREME COURT:

I am thankful there’s still a little common sense in one branch of the Montana government.

MTN News is reporting that the Montana Supreme Court has struck down four election-related regulations passed by the 2021 Legislature, ruling they violated the fundamental right to vote.

According to MTN, the four bills at issue in this case were:

  • House Bill 176, which eliminated Election Day voter registration for most Montanans and closed the late registration window at noon the day before an election.
  • House Bill 506, which said someone who had not yet turned 18 but would be 18 before Election Day could not receive an absentee ballot.
  • One section of House Bill 530, which directed the Secretary of State to create rules prohibiting anyone from accepting payment to collect absentee ballots.
  • Senate Bill 169, which required additional identification for people using student IDs to vote.

I find it fascinating that Republicans are so hell-bent on keeping people from voting and that many of them still believe the 2020 election was stolen from Donald Trump.

ISRAELI MILITARY ACTION IN GAZA:

Gallup Polling is reporting that after narrowly backing Israel’s military action in Gaza in November, Americans now oppose the campaign by a solid margin. Fifty-five percent currently disapprove of Israel’s actions, while 36% approve.

You can count me as one of the 55% who disapprove of Israel’s action. I think it was OK for Israel to go after Hamas militants attacked Israel. Now, way too many innocents are being killed by Israel. It has to end.

  1. “Legislative Extremists Class of ’21” has been having a rough few weeks in the courts, what with this most recent strike down and the previous 86’ing of some abortion restrictions.

At least now they have something to do next year, crafting and passing some slightly altered versions of these same unconstitutional laws, instead of having to worry about what they might do for Montana families and/or property taxpayers.
