Thursday Thoughts

Greetings! A lot is going on and here are the topics that made today’s column:

  • MT SOS Interference
  • V-J Day Photo
  • Super Tuesday Recap
  • Mitch McConnell
  • One More Thing

MT SECRETARY OF STATE INTERFERENCE:

Thank goodness that The Electric is on top of local issues or we might never find out what is happening in our local government.

For example, The Electric is reporting that Montana Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen emailed Cascade County Commissioners in February urging them not to rehire Rina Fontana Moore or a member of her past team for the election administrator position.

Jacobsen sent the email via her state government account with the state seal. It appears the commissioners followed her request, although they say the Secretary of State did not influence their decision. The commissioners did a nice job of denying she affected their decision, but I don’t believe it and you shouldn’t either.

In my opinion, the commissioners did not hire the best qualified for the job (Rina Fontana Moore) or the second-best qualified (Lynn DeRoche). Instead, they hired a person who had no experience. This is a presidential election year and the elections office should be running on all cylinders.

This whole episode smells of bullshit. I expect more from Jacobsen. As for the commissioners, they are a lost cause.

V-J DAY PHOTO:

I shook my head in disbelief when I read in an Associated Press (AP) report that the Department of Veterans Affairs was banning the V-J Day in Times Square photograph of a Navy sailor kissing a woman he did not know on the streets of New York at the end of World War II.

A memo from the VA said the photo “depicts a non-consensual act” and is inconsistent with the department’s sexual harassment policy. The photo will not be displayed in any VA facilities.

Within a few hours the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Denis McDonough, reversed the memo saying, “Let me be clear: This image is not banned from VA facilities — and we will keep it in VA facilities.”

What made me shake my head even more in disbelief was how fast Republicans attacked the Biden administration over the memo. If the Republicans in the House and Senate moved this fast on spending bills, debt, and border security, the USA would not be as screwed up as it is.

SUPER TUESDAY RECAP:

Unless something weird happens, it will be “Trump vs Biden 2.” Nikki Haley quit Wednesday morning after only winning one state on Super Tuesday. Haley’s concession speech was short and to the point. I appreciate that.

It looks like we will have about eight months of general election campaigning. That’s a long time when the candidates are older than dirt.

I suggest that Haley’s supporters support Joe Biden. Trump called your candidate names and belittled her husband who is deployed with the military overseas. Biden respects veterans those who serve and their families.

MITCH MCCONNELL:

Putting his political party ahead of his country, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell endorsed Donald Trump for President. (Source)

I don’t care for McConnell. Never have. He is at a place in his career where he could make an impact by not endorsing Trump. But he didn’t and when history is written, it won’t be kind to McConnell for being a chickenshit.

ONE MORE THING:

The State of the Union address is tonight (Thursday). I usually watch it on C-SPAN as they stay away from the political pundits and have more coverage leading up to the speech.

Of course, it will be like a sports contest with cheers and boos because we are so divided that we should not expect anything else. Go USA!

  1. MT SOS kerfuffle, as I replied to a friend, “We have only ourselves to blame. We won’t vote for democrats so she is what we get.”
