Hello there – It’s Monday, August 7, 2023, and here are the topics I am commenting about today:
- The Missouri Room
- U.S. Senate Montana 2024
- 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup
- One More Thing
THE MISSOURI ROOM:
The Electric reported last week that Great Falls City Commissioners voted unanimously during their Aug. 1 meeting to approve a $321,950 design contract for a court remodel. The city is planning to remodel the historical Missouri Room upstairs in the Civic Center into the Municipal Court, which is currently in the basement of the building.
It is kind of ironic that the city finds money to spend on this and also to spend to promote the safety levy.
The city is adding a second Municipal Court judge after voter approval last year.
I think they could have found a better place to place the second judge. Now they will use the whole Missouri Room (4,100 square feet) to place both judges and supporting areas like staff and jury rooms. Currently, the lone judge is in the basement of the civic center and the basement is like visiting a cave where the walking dead are roaming around.
I’ve attended several events in the Missouri room from political debates and government meetings to wedding receptions. In fact, I was on the dance floor in the Missouri Room for a wedding reception just a few weeks ago (I still have some moves).
It is too bad we are losing this historical room to the municipal court. Shame on the city and the leaders.
Maybe they can keep the dance floor intact…
U.S. SENATE MONTANA 2024:
There are a couple of articles from the Montana Free Press (MTFP) about U.S. Senate candidate Tim Sheehy being in Gallatin Gateway last Thursday for a town hall moderated by the America First Policy Institute, a right-wing think tank founded by former advisers to former President Donald Trump.
The MTFP reported:
And while his team ushered Sheehy away after the event and declined to field questions from Montana Free Press — questions that would have addressed, for example, how he plans to ethically run for Senate while continuing to serve as CEO of an aerial firefighting company with substantial federal government contracts — the candidate’s comments nonetheless illuminated his views on a number of current issues, from the recent criminal charges filed against Trump to foreign policy and culture wars.
It was also reported:
Sheehy, meanwhile, didn’t vote for Trump in the 2016 primary, according to the Daily Beast, and didn’t donate to the former president until April of 2023, by which time Axios had reported that he was being groomed for a Senate bid. In 2021, he gave a maximum $5,000 donation to the political action committee of Trump challenger Nikki Haley.
But this year he told Montana Talks’ Aaron Flint that he supports Trump in his legal issues and his candidacy for president in 2024. Daines has also endorsed Trump for president.
So, in other words, Sheehy is a mini-Steve Daines, and as Daines has done, he drank the MAGA Kool-Aid and sold his soul to Trump.
I don’t think Montanans want a person who can be bought off that easily, as it appears Sheehy has been.

2023 FIFA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP:
I was one of the people who arose early Sunday morning for the 3:00 am (Mountain time) match between the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) and Sweden.
It was worth watching.
The teams went scoreless through regulation (90 minutes) and 30 minutes of overtime. Then it was nail-biting time as they went to penalty kicks. Sweden’s Lina Hurtig penalty kick cleared the goal line by about a millimeter to seal the win 5-4.
Then the haters came out in full force. Some Americans were rooting for Sweden to win because they hate the USA team for various reasons like that the starting eleven players didn’t all sing the National Anthem, or that some don’t have their hands over their hearts during the National Anthem. The haters pick the low fruit to say they hate (singing & heart), but in all reality, some don’t like that some of the players are openly gay. Some don’t like it that years ago, some players took a knee during the anthem.
They should get over it.
On social media, I saw one post that summed it up for me. It said something like: Nothing says “America First” more than rooting against the U.S. national team because they peacefully exercised freedom of speech.
Others exercised their freedom of speech.
One person thanked Sweden for taking the trash out to the curb.
The Blaze columnist Jason Whitlock devoted a whole column to express his hatred toward the team writing, “I don’t feel bad rooting against the U.S. women’s national soccer team in the World Cup. I’m not going to feign indifference. I want them to lose.”
Megyn Kelly, who has a podcast on SiriusXM, was quoted in the New York Post saying, “I don’t know about you, but I’m not rooting for them. I’m not with them. I hope they lose … It’s shameful.”
It looks like Whitlock and Kelly got their wish.
I do not understand how an American could root against a USA team in an international competition. I have been cheering for the USWNT for years. I will always support the USA over other international teams, and you can bet that I will continue to support them.
USA! USA! USA!
ONE MORE THING:
The Mega Millions Lottery jackpot is $1.55 billion – that’s $1,550,000,000.
The next drawing is Tuesday night! More information can be found HERE.

I have a recommendation for you and your readers. A New England history professor named Heather Cox Richardson produces a nightly blog entitled letters from an American. Her article last night was really excellent. You can find it at HeatherCoxRichardsonsubstack.com
Thank you. I have read some of her commentary before and enjoyed it. -JmB
I think the money for the remodel is coming from Bidens’ Rescue Plan Act. Covid relief money that no republican voted for.
Exactly. They seem to find money to do things. Thanks, JmB
