The Wednesday Read

Today is Wednesday, August 2, 2023, and here are the topics for today’s commentary:

  • The Third Time
  • U.S. Supreme Court
  • One More Thing

THE THIRD TIME:

Former President Donald Trump was indicted for a third time on Tuesday.

The Associated Press (AP) reports:

Donald Trump was indicted on felony charges Tuesday for working to overturn the results of the 2020 election in the run-up to the violent riot by his supporters at the U.S. Capitol, with the Justice Department acting to hold him accountable for an unprecedented effort to block the peaceful transfer of presidential power and threaten American democracy.

The AP also reports that Trump is due in court Thursday, the first step in a legal process that will play out in a courthouse situated between the White House he once controlled and the Capitol his supporters once stormed. The case is already being dismissed by the former president and his supporters — and even some of his rivals — as just another politically motivated prosecution.

Here in Montana, supporters like U.S. Senator Steve Daines, had this to say via Twitter:

Today’s charges against President Trump reek of prosecutorial misconduct. Every American should be troubled by the fact that President Biden’s DOJ is attempting to put his top political rival in prison.
Meanwhile evidence of corruption continues to pile up against Hunter Biden and appears now more than ever to implicate President Biden himself. We must put an end to the two systems of justice in America.

U.S. Representative Matt Rosendale posted the following message on Twitter:

Another sham indictment from Biden’s Department of Injustice! This is a blatant attempt by the Left to tamper with our elections.
I urge my House and Senate colleagues to immediately support @RepMattGaetz’s bill, as I have, to defund this witch hunt.

We even heard from U.S. Senate candidate Tim Sheehy who has proudly sided with the MAGA crowd:

Joe Biden knows he can’t beat Trump at the ballot box, so he’s trying to throw him in prison.
If anyone should go to jail, it’s Joe & Hunter Biden, who, based on Devon Archer’s testimony from yesterday, engaged in shocking corruption.

Who are these guys, the three stooges?

It’s incredible to me that these three and others can stick by Trump, who almost destroyed our great country. Their support shows they place the party over the country. They should not hold elective offices. They are blind.

After Trump’s second indictment, a poll found that he still had tremendous support which shows the ignorance of his supporters. A New York Times Seina Poll found that Trump leads his closest competitor, Ron DeSantis, 54%-17%. (Source)

U.S. SUPREME COURT:

Gallup released a new poll yesterday regarding the U.S. Supreme Court. Here is what the poll found:

The U.S. Supreme Court’s eventful 2022-2023 term appears to have had no effect on Americans’ overall opinion of the high court, with its 40% approval rating the same as Gallup found last September, just before the start of the term. The current rating ties the court’s record-low job score first recorded in September 2021, which ticked up to 43% in July 2022 before dropping back to 40%.

When they break it down by political party:

As on many opinion measures, ratings of the Supreme Court differ starkly by political party. Currently, 62% of Republicans versus 17% of Democrats approve of the job the court is doing, as do 41% of independents.

There is a 6-3 conservative majority on the court, so that is the reason for the Republican happiness.

I expect the court’s favorable ratings will continue to slide down into the toilet.

ONE MORE THING:

Mick Jagger turned 80 last week. Mitch McConnell is 81.
Don’t believe the lies about how healthy living is going to keep you young and vibrant.
The secret, apparently, is drugs, sex, rock and roll, and staying up all night.

  1. Clearly the GOP cannot argue the facts nor the law, so they’re pounding the table and doing it loudly. I long for the old GOP and civil discourse.

    • It is pretty sad that Daines, Rosendale, and Sheehy think carrying out a scheme to invalidate and overthrow an election is a crime that should go unpunished. Just like they seem to think that willfully retaining classified government documents and then engaging in obstruction of the government’s attempts to reclaim them is a crime that should go unpunished.

Little wonder we a rise in lawlessness in this country when “leaders” like these three exhibit total disdain for the rule of law.
