Tuesday’s Quick Hits

Here are the topics that caught my attention for this column:

  • Cascade County Elections
  • Kaiser Family Foundation

CASCADE COUNTY ELECTIONS:

In case you missed it, there was supposed to be public testing of the tabulation machines on April 12. Today I noticed the Cascade County Elections website contained the following message:

Public testing of the tabulation machines has been rescheduled for April 25th at 2pm at Exhibition Hall in Expo Park

Mark your calendars! The funny thing, maybe “funny” is not the right word, so I will say the “interesting” thing is that many people who supported the current clerk and recorder and some who are volunteering in her office signed a petition that was sent to the Cascade County Commissioners asking them to ban all electronic voting equipment, excluding Automark machines and to ban mail-in ballots except for overseas, military, disabled or other qualified persons. Those were just two demands among several other batshit crazy things. (Source)

I hear from many people in Cascade County who do not trust the current Clerk and Recorder, Sandra Merchant, and her team to conduct a fair and/or accurate election.

In case you missed it, The Electric conducted an interview with Cascade County Commissioner Jim Larson. I was not impressed with Larson, nor did he alleviate the concerns I have about elections in Cascade County, especially when he says, “I’m hoping they go off as planned,” when referring to the May 2 election.

Mostly Larson reminded me of “Sergeant Schultz” from Hogan’s Heroes saying, “I know nothing, nothing,” but then talked about it anyway.

KAISER FAMILY FOUNDATION:

We had another mass shooting happening this week (Louisville) and we can bet that nothing will be done by our leaders to prevent the next one. According to CBS News and Gun Violence Archive:

Monday’s deadly shooting in Louisville adds to the devastating statistics about violence in the nation. According to Gun Violence Archive, an independent research and data collection organization, this attack was the 146th mass shooting of the year. The group defines a mass shooting as an incident where four or more victims are shot or killed, not including the shooter. (Source)

Today, the Kaiser Family Foundation released a new survey that showed:

Experiences with gun-related incidents are common across the country, with about one in five adults saying that they have personally been threatened with a gun (21%) or had a family member killed by a gun, including by suicide (19%), finds a new KFF survey about Americans’ experiences with gun-related violence and incidents. One in six (17%) say they personally witnessed someone being shot.

God bless America – we can do better.

You can read the press release and view the survey HERE.

ONE MORE THING:

In case you missed it, here was the Easter Message from former President Donald J. Trump that was posted on Truth Social (Source):

HAPPY EASTER TO ALL, INCLUDING THOSE THAT DREAM ENDLESSLY OF DESTROYING OUR COUNTRY BECAUSE THEY ARE INCAPABLE OF DREAMING ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE, THOSE THAT ARE SO INCOMPETENT THEY DON’T REALIZE THAT HAVING A BORDER AND POWERFUL WALL IS A GOOD THING, & HAVING VOTER I.D., ALL PAPER BALLOTS, & SAME DAY VOTING WILL QUICKLY END MASSIVE VOTER FRAUD, & TO ALL OF THOSE WEAK & PATHETIC RINOS, RADICAL LEFT DEMOCRATS, SOCIALISTS MARXISTS, & COMMUNISTS WHO ARE KILLING OUR NATION, REMEMBER, WE WILL BE BACK!

  1. Merchant – 2nd rescheduled public event in a row = a pattern. The dog must have eaten this homework too. Flunk.

Larson – To me his interview said he is very concerned, but the people voted for Merchant so he wants to respect their choice and give her a chance.

Latest gun massacre – Read online there are some right wingnut talking heads out there like Gorka who are claiming mass shooting murders are due to woke insanity, because the shooter publicly posted preferred pronouns, He/Him. Which of course would not explain all the mass shooting murders going back to Columbine, but never mind logic. But damn … now the right wing extremists want us to hate on all the he/hims of this world, too?

    • P.S. – Anyone know of a good neighborhood bookie who will take action on whether or not the April 25th (or whenever) tabulator test will surprisingly come up a failure necessitating a hand count of the school election ballots? And maybe a parlay, along with people mysteriously not receiving their mail absentee ballots so being forced to go vote in person if they want to vote?

    • One other thing that just struck me from that County election page …

“Absentee ballots have a new envelope this year due to an envelope shortage. Some of the traditional green signature envelopes have been replaced with a white envelope with a green stripe. ”

So now there’s an envelope shortage in America? Thanks Biden.

But maybe just for fun we should all compare and contrast which envelopes we get based on our usual partisan voting patterns. (Assuming we get them.) Wouldn’t want to entertain any suspicions that maybe those highly partisan employees and volunteers at the elections office were intentionally assigning one color to voters of one persuasion and another color to voters of another, so as to make it easy for them to “accidentally” misplace some, would we? And oh yeah, check your ballot for any suspicious identifying marks, too.

Gosh it is easy and fun to come up with election conspiracies just like Sandra and her crue.

      • We should all be paranoid, what with highly partisan election conspiracists with a specific agenda making up the mail ballot envelopes by hand, instead of a nice impersonal mailing machine doing it. Sure machines might not be infallible but they are generally not tempted to corruption.

This woman has totally destroyed my trust in the integrity of Cascade County elections and it is barely mid-April. There will be a cloud and questions hanging over every election on her watch.

      • What’s scarier than even their specific agenda is their complete and utter incompetence. I don’t think they’re even smart enough to achieve their nefarious goals. They obviously haven’t thought this through. The resultant chaos could be a spectacular display of MAGA nificent proportions. It’s getting too late in the game to do anything else. They will have effectively brought democracy to a halt in Cascade County. Then what?

  2. Can Merchant be sued to do her job correctly if the county won’t force her to? I have a hard time believing that she can unilaterally force her MAGA beliefs on the rest of us without first having gone through some kind of due process. I don’t know. I’m just asking. This situation seems pretty dire, especially since we have a constitutionalist sheriff who I suspect is sympathetic to wacky ideas. He might feel emboldened to intervene, since he’s now above the U.S. Supreme Court.
