Quote for the day…
I’ve opened a can of worms. They just sit there, the worms. Hardly the chaos that’s been advertised. – Unknown
Today’s independent commentary deals with these issues:
- The Western Word Poll
- Food Processing Plant Conspiracy
- Linda Skeens
- The fetus & HOV Lane
THE WESTERN WORD POLL:
This week’s poll question asks, “Should President Joe Biden run for reelection?” (Background)
The results will be posted later this week.
FOOD PROCESSING PLANT CONSPIRACY:
Is there a plan to destroy food processing plants in the United States to cripple our food supply? Several right-wingers are posting stories about “accidental fires” that are destroying food processing plants.
The Reuters Fact Check team and several other fact-checkers have debunked the claim after looking at the evidence.
Check out the report from Reuters HERE.
One would think those posting the fake information would check before they post to see if it is true. This story was debunked months ago. Most educated people would check before they post – that is if they really wanted the truth out there…
LINDA SKEENS:
National Public Radio (NPR) and several other sources reported about Linda Skeens and her dominance at the local county fair:
Deep in southwest Virginia, there’s a county fair where, last month, one woman won first, second and third place for best cookies.
She also swept all three awards for candy and for savory bread.
In fact, she won the blue ribbon for cake, pie, brownie, sweet bread and best overall baked good (that was strawberry fudge.)
It didn’t stop there.
She also won for canned tomatoes, canned corn, pickled peppers, sauerkraut, relish, spaghetti sauce and both jelly and jam. Then she took top honors in quilt embroidery. And after the Virginia Kentucky District Fair posted these utterly dominating results to Facebook in June, you guessed it — she went viral.
Congratulations to Linda! I wonder if she has any homemade pickled beets – one of my favorites!

THE FETUS & HOV LANE:
I found this interesting…
A pregnant Texas woman who was given a traffic ticket for driving solo in an HOV lane intends to fight the citation, arguing her fetus should be considered a separate person given the Lone Star State’s views on abortion. (NY Post)
Maybe we need to run this by the U.S. Supreme Court…
Nonetheless, I applaud this woman!

We currently witness a lot of debate over the right to marry. Since SCOTUS has declared that corporations are entitled to the rights and privileges of citizens, they too should have the right to marry.
That would open up vast realms of potential legal issues, both civil and criminal. Does this mean that a hostile takeover is analogous to rape? Would a stock IPO be treated as a birth, with announcements and cigars? Who would be the godparents? Would a corporate marriage be consummated like a personal marriage? The image is inescapable – the two CEOs in the honeymoon suite of a posh hotel, the multitude of VPs, MBAs, marketing execs huddled outside, listening at the keyhole. The mind boggles.
Fred – great imagination! Thanks, JmB
