Do not correct a fool, or he will hate you; correct a wise man and he will appreciate you. – Proverbs 9:8
Welcome to another exciting edition of Caught My Eye (CME).
CME is the once a week column that is posted here every Friday morning. This is when I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week. There may be some sarcasm and pointed independent commentary so be warned!
Here are the topics that “Caught My Eye” this week:
- Republican National Convention
- MTSEN Poll
- Ed Buttrey
- Pro-Life/Pro-Choice
- One More Thing
REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION:
The fourth and final night of the Republican National Convention (RNC) is in the books with President Donald Trump talking viewers to death for about 71 minutes. The tone of the speakers Thursday night was just as dark as the other three nights.
It was so long that I tweeted; “Children who could not walk before Trump’s speech are now driving.”
First of all, I am pissed at the Hatch Act violations that took place during the whole convention. As a former member of the military and on the professional staff of a U.S. Senator, I was trained over and over not to campaign on official time. I was paid by the taxpayers when working for the Senator and could not ask people to vote for him or campaign for him on official time.
I also could not campaign in government (taxpayer-funded) offices. The Senator could not go to Malmstrom Air Force Base and host a campaign event.
But Thursday night President Trump and several people employed by the Federal government campaigned on White House grounds. There were Trump/Pence campaign signs. The night before, the Vice President did the same thing only on other government property. The night before that, the First Lady gave her convention speech from the Rose Garden. This is terrible precedence and one that Republicans would scream to the high heavens if a Democrat was doing it.
The speech was attended by 1,500-2,000 people. Most were not wearing masks and there was not any social distancing. One would think that Team Trump would want to keep supporters healthy and alive for the November 3 election.
Trump’s speech was more of the same from his rallies. He said that Joe Biden would take your guns. It’s funny, I have heard that Democrats want to take my guns but over the years the Democrats have controlled the House and Senate and the White House and I still have the same number of guns.
The Trump campaign seems to want to put the coronavirus in the past, but people won’t let them.
As for the Biden campaign, they stated that “Since the beginning of the Republican convention, at least 3,525 Americans have lost their lives to the coronavirus.”

MTSEN POLL:
Earlier this week I wrote that there are a couple of cute campaign commercials running for U.S. Senator Steve Daines (R-MT) and Governor Steve Bullock (D-MT) which features all or part of their families. I asked readers to watch the commercials and pick the best one.
Here are the results:
- Steve Bullock: 87%
- Steve Daines: 13%
I do not vote in my polls, but I liked the Bullock commercial better because the children seemed more genuine.
Thanks for participating!
ED BUTTREY:
Before I get started, I like Ed Buttrey. I’ve known him for years and he is one of the good people involved in politics. I wish he was running in my district because he would get my vote. I hope he runs for statewide office in the future.
Earlier this week MTN News reported that Jaime Horn, a Democratic candidate to represent Montana’s 21st House District in the Montana Legislature, sent a photo to MTN News this week of his Republican challenger Ed Buttrey sitting in a room that has a Nazi swastika framed on the wall.
To give some credit to MTN News, they investigated and found out that Buttrey was attending a meeting at the local VFW where the VFW displayed the Nazi flag because it was captured in WWII. Someone took the photo in hopes to harm Buttrey. I think it’s because he is a moderate Republican and not a kook like so many other Montana Republicans.
This all could have been avoided if Horn would have called Buttrey and asked him about the photo. I remember a time where candidates did things like that.
Sadly we live in the day and age of gotcha politics. This attempt backfired.
PRO-LIFE/PRO-CHOICE:
I had an ultraconservative friend post THIS ARTICLE about Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood director speaking at the Republican National Convention. Reminder – the article is from a website called “Life Site.”
I mentioned her speech earlier this week and also mentioned that there were some holes in her recollection.
I found the comments fascinating from both sides. The comments were mostly from women, but not all. I did not comment. One person claims she had an abortion. Others were just touched by Johnson’s story. The debate spiraled into fetuses, pain, embryos, and adoption. As far as I can tell, no minds were changed.
Abortion has always been a hot political topic. The Trump team wants people to think that Biden will allow abortions up to the time the kid enters first grade. The Biden team wants people to believe that Trump will take away a woman’s right to choose.
As for me, my mind has changed over time. I once was a very strong pro-life person. I see both sides now. Today I hope that a woman will think it through and consider all options, but it is ultimately up to her. I pray that there are fewer abortions, but they are legal.
ONE MORE THING:
From the believe it or not files…
Melania Trump ‘refused to move to White House until the Obamas’ toilet had been ripped out & a new one installed’

Doug – not surprising that there are lots of broken promises and lies. – Thanks, JmB
As if Parscale wasn’t in enough trouble with Don Trump already. hee hee
Democrats need to be very careful in attacking someone like Ed Buttrey and Lew Jones. Mr. Buttrey really is responsible for Medicaid Expansion in Montana. I was not happy with a few things that ended up in the bill but he needed to give a scrap to far right wing GOP to get it passed. If Gianforte is elected governor we will especially need sane minds like Jones and Buttrey to hopefully rein in the GOP right wing wackos in 2021 legislature. I was wondering who paid for all those US flags this past week at GOP convention. Trump certainly likes to wrap himself in the flag that he avoided serving for. Well I guess those bone spurs are no problem on the golf course. People please fill out your damm census forms!!
Dennis – Thanks. Good commentary. – JmB
Joe Biden is on record supporting mandatory government “buybacks” of assault weapons. From RCP: https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2019/08/06/biden_calls_for_gun_buyback_program_making_assault_weapons_illegal_period.html
“COOPER: So, to gun owners out there who say, well, a Biden administration means they’re going to come for my guns?
BIDEN: Bingo. You’re right if you have an assault weapon. The fact of the matter is, they should be illegal, period. Look, the Second Amendment doesn’t say you can’t restrict the kinds of weapons people can own. You can’t buy a bazooka. You can’t have a flame thrower.”
Kamala Harris also supports these confiscation measures. It is entirely fair argument, then, for Trump (or anyone else) to say that the Democrats — if they are being honest — will indeed come after guns.
Kenny – like I said, eight years and nobody took my guns.
Trump is behind in the polls so he is using scare tactics.
With his remarks in the past, he might be more inclined to take my guns than most.
Thanks for your comments. -JmB
Mike, you’re right that Republicans have beat the “Democrats will take your guns” drum for years. That said, Trump is highlighting Biden’s remarks, because, well, Biden actually said them. Given Biden’s rhetoric on guns, it would be political malpractice for Trump to ignore it.
Can you recall a major party nominee coming out as strongly as Biden has against the 2nd Amendment? I can’t.
Kenny – to take guns the House, the Senate (60 votes), and the President and then majority of SCOTUS would all have to approve. I appreciate your thoughts. Thanks, JmB
Mike, re: your comment that, “to take guns the House, the Senate (60 votes), and the President and then majority of SCOTUS would all have to approve.” … are you sure that’s true? The Democrats passed a 10-year national assault weapons ban in 1994 (52-48 margin in the Senate, with strong support from Biden, incidentally), which survived numerous court challenges.
Kenny – True, but i still have the same number of guns today that I did then.
Sadly it did not stop the massacre at Sandy Hook or in Vegas or numerous others. If our elected officials can let 20 five to seven year olds get murdered and do nothing, our country has lost it’s conscience. What I am saying is no one is going to take our guns if they did nothing after these events. -JmB
Mike, I tend to agree that no one will take our guns, though today’s D’s are nothing like the Democratic Party of the 1990s — and they actually *did* outlaw assault weapons. Beyond gun control, a significant chunk of the 2020 Democratic Party platform, if enacted, would be unprecedented. I guess we’ll see! 🙂
Kenny – thanks for debating. Take care! – JmB
See: Kyle Rittenhouse, review his actions and the list of charges he will face.
The adult who signed off on his purchase should face charges as well.
See: Stephen Paddock
See: Air Force Sgt. Steven Carrillo, last night Pence tried to pin the actions of a Boogaloo Boi on antifa and BLM
That’s just a small sample.
The ammosexual crowd has proven they don’t know how to own and operate their toys appropriately.
it is sad that most do not understand the importance of the Hatch Act. Should be required learning before high school graduation.
Press covering my campaign has exploded plus no evidence my message backfired beyond trolling by the alt-right. Sorry not sorry to your and your good friend.
Jaime – Thanks for your comments. -JmB
It backfired. Trust me. Grow up!
Agreed, Rick.
Really? Because my fundraising has exploded. Lol, get over it.
Did no one advise Melania not to wear a green dress?
The memes! The meeeemes!
