The Monday Memo

It’s gardening season! Five weeks ago I planted myself on the sofa and I’ve grown considerably. – Unknown

Today’s independent commentary deals with these people/issues:

  • Heroes Act
  • Eric Trump
  • One More Thing

HEROES ACT:

The Heroes Act, which is a new $3 trillion coronavirus relief package, passed the Democratic-controlled U.S. House on Friday by a vote of 208-199 with 23 members not voting. (Reuters)

The President said he would veto it and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said it was “dead on arrival.”

Several Trump supporters voiced their happiness that it would be “dead on arrival” and that Trump said he was against it.

Those same Trump supporters, many of them lacking any intelligence in the operation of the legislative and executive branches, should take a few minutes and re-watch the Schoolhouse Rock video “I’m Just a Bill” to see what can happen to a bill that passes the House.

Many people from both sides of the aisle agree that there needs to be more help from the Federal Government because of the pandemic. With that being the case, the Senate should pass their bill and then compromise with the House to get a bill that will pass the House and the Senate and be signed by the President.

There should not be any cheering from one side or the other. We’re in some serious shit these days – and the shit is too deep for partisan squabbling.

ERIC TRUMP:

Eric Trump is a son of President Donald Trump. His mother is Ivana – who was Donald’s first wife. Donald is on wife number three if you are keeping score at home. On Saturday Night Live, Eric is portrayed as the dumb brother, and as you read further, you will probably see why.

Over the weekend, we got a glimpse of the Trump reelection talking points when Eric appeared on Fox News’ Justice with Judge Jeanine. According to the Washington Post, Eric Trump suggested the president’s critics were using the pandemic to undermine his father’s rallies, calling it a “cognizant strategy” that would cease once it was no longer politically expedient. He also said that the coronavirus will “magically” vanish after the November election.

According to the Post:

“They think they are taking away Donald Trump’s greatest tool, which is being able to go into an arena and fill it with 50,000 people every single time,” the younger Trump said. “You watch, they’ll milk it every single day between now and November 3. And guess what, after November 3, coronavirus will magically, all of a sudden, go away and disappear and everybody will be able to reopen.”

It’s dumb for Eric Trump to say that, but knowing Trump supporters this talking point will resonate with them and we’ll hear it over and over.

Trump supporters seem to be know-it-alls and believe that it’s all a grand plan to beat Trump. They don’t want the ‘gub-ment” to tell them what to do.

I suggest they have their protests; that they stand around in groups with their guns and act tough, and not wash their hands or wear masks if they believe it’s all a conspiracy to get Trump.

Maybe they’ll stay healthy until November 3, maybe not.

Trump supporters should remember the following quote from Dirty Harry:

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

ONE MORE THING:

This pandemic has fully, finally torn back the curtain on the idea that so many of the folks in charge know what they’re doing. – Barack Obama 05/16/20
