Today’s independent commentary deals with these people/issues:
- Trump National Doral
- World Series Poll
- 2019-20 NBA Season
- Most Wonderful Time of the Year
- One More Thing
TRUMP NATIONAL DORAL:
In Friday’s column, I mentioned that President Trump was going to host the Group of Seven summit at his Miami golf resort called Trump National Doral.
The Associated Press reported that his selection was sparking an outcry from critics who called it the most blatant example yet of him using the power of his office to boost his business empire.
I said that because of Trump’s actions, our founding fathers are rolling over in their graves.
Then on Saturday evening in a series of Tweets, Trump said:
…Therefore, based on both Media & Democrat Crazed and Irrational Hostility, we will no longer consider Trump National Doral, Miami, as the Host Site for the G-7 in 2020. We will begin the search for another site, including the possibility of Camp David, immediately. Thank you!
I’m sure Trump read my column and that changed his mind. Nonetheless, it was the right thing to do.
WORLD SERIES POLL:
The teams are set for the 2019 World Series and I want to know who you think will win it – the Washington Nationals from the National League or the Houston Astros from the American League.
Please CLICK HERE to participate in The Western Word poll.
2019-20 NBA SEASON:
In case you are a fan, the National Basketball Association (NBA) season begins Tuesday (October 22). Check out the schedule HERE.
I’m not sure which teams will make the NBA Finals. There have been a lot of players changing teams, so it will be interesting to watch how they play.
MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR:
This is a very special time of year for sports fans…
We have the NBA season beginning this week. The National Hockey League (NHL) season is underway. Major League Baseball (MLB) is getting ready for the World Series, and the NFL and College Football are going strong. Throw in the NASCAR playoffs and with the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) still having a couple of races left, this makes this time of year the most wonderful time for sports fans. I’m sure there are some sports I missed.
You’re probably going to need new batteries for your remote…
ONE MORE THING:
There’s an interesting stat floating around. Here is how USA Today reported it:
The New York Yankees are synonymous with the Fall Classic.
Just not this decade.
The Bronx Bombers have reached the World Series 40 times in their history, winning 27 titles, by far more than any other major league team.
But in the 2010s, even a trip to the World Series has eluded the iconic franchise.
This is the first decade in which the Yankees didn’t reach the World Series since the 1910s.
USA Today also reported that the Yankees have lost the American League Championship Series four consecutive times – in 2010, 2012, 2017, and 2019 – tying the longest streak in MLB history.
I don’t feel too bad for the Yanks.
I remember back in 1976, 1977, and 1978 when those Yankees beat my Kansas City Royals three straight years for the American League Championship. Finally, in 1980, the Royals beat the Yankees to go to the World Series – only to lose to the Phillies.
