Today’s independent commentary deals with these people/issues:
- Drip, Drip, Drip…
- Tough Guy
- Never Trump
DRIP, DRIP, DRIP…
Reuters and other news organizations reported over the weekend about a second whistleblower coming forward with first-hand knowledge of President Donald Trump’s attempts to get the Ukrainian president to investigate a political rival. That’s according to the whistleblower’s lawyer Mark Zaid.
“First-hand knowledge” is great, but the big question is did Rep. Adam Schiff or his staff have any contact with this new person.
If the impeachment of President Trump reaches the Senate, how many Republican senators will vote to convict him? One? Two? Three?
As far as I know, only three Republican senators have criticized Trump over his China remarks: Mitt Romney, Ben Sasse, and Susan Collins. (Source)
Axios is reporting that White House acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney has said he thinks President Trump could win 45 states in 2020 after the impeachment process — a magnitude of landslide that few if any independent pollsters would dare predict.
That’s a bold prediction!
TOUGH GUY:
The Trump campaign released a new 30-second campaign video that says, “Mr. Nice Guy won’t cut it. It takes a tough guy to change Washington, it takes Donald Trump.” You can see the whole video HERE.
When I heard the “tough guy” remark I automatically thought of the song by the greatest rock band of all time, REO Speedwagon, and their song, “Tough Guys.” Here’s part of the lyrics:
-Alfalfa, will you swing me before we have lunch?
-Sure, Darla.
-Say, Romeo. What about your promise to the He-Man-Woman-Haters-Club?
-I’m sorry, Spanky. I’ve got to live my own life.
She doesn’t like the tough guys,
they think that they can do anything they please,
but they’re gonna get a surprise,
when she brings them to their knees…
Watch the REO Speedwagon “Tough Guys” video HERE.
Nonetheless, it’s a good campaign video for Trump. It was aired during Sunday Night Football which is one of the highest-rated shows on television.
NEVER TRUMP:
I had almost forgotten about the “Never Trump” group of Republicans who back in 2016 vowed to never vote for Donald Trump.
Their tune has now changed. The New York Times reports that they should probably be called the “Never Mind Trump.” Read the NY Times story HERE.
Back in 2016, I wrote an opinion piece that appeared in several newspapers across Montana. I titled it, “The GOP Deserves Trump.” Here is the closing:
Trump has been called a con artist, a phony, a bully, vulgar, a pathological liar, a race-baiting xenophobic religious bigot. Ironically, those were just remarks made by fellow Republicans.
It looks like the Republican Party has the nominee in Trump that they deserve. They basically imploded in front of all America.
Trump’s taking down of the Grand Old Party is making the regional and state battles about some candidates being a Republican In Name Only seem even more ridiculous. The GOP now has the biggest RINO of all. Donald Trump has assumed the Republican mantle.
Good luck with that.
Many conservatives changed their tune about Trump and now embrace him. As a moderate, I never embraced Trump and I never will.
That does not mean the Democrat automatically gets my vote, either.
