Caught My Eye…

Leaders don’t force people to follow — they invite them on a journey. – Charles S. Lauer

Welcome to the big column to end the week, “Caught My Eye” (CME)!

If you are a first-time visitor, welcome! CME is the once a week column that is posted here every Friday morning. This is when I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week. There may be some sarcasm and pointed independent commentary so be warned!

Here are the topics that “Caught My Eye” this week:

  • Israel
  • Rep. Steve King
  • Greenland
  • One More Thing

ISRAEL:

The following was the Reuters headline:

Israel bars U.S. Democratic lawmakers Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib under pressure from Trump

Here is the first graph of the Reuters story:

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday barred U.S. Democratic congresswomen Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar from making a planned trip to Israel, shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump called on his ally not to let them in.

Shame on Netanyahu and Israel – and that’s me being nice!

Members of Congress should cancel their trips to Israel until Tlaib and Omar are allowed to visit. Our citizens should not be treated like this by a so-called ally.

U.S. REPRESENTATIVE STEVE KING:

U.S. Representative Steve King (R-IA) has already been stripped of his committee assignments in this Congress. That did not stop King from running his mouth and saying more stupid things this week.

The Des Moines Register reported King was answering a question about why he is against exceptions for abortion in cases of rape or incest:

“What if we went back through all the family trees and just pulled those people out that were products of rape and incest? Would there be any population of the world left if we did that?” he said at the event in Urbandale, Iowa.
“Considering all the wars and all the rapes and pillages taken place and whatever happened to culture after society? I know I can’t certify that I’m not a part of a product of that.”

It’s time for Congress to expel King. Although we see memes from the uneducated saying members of Congress should be impeached, the correct method to remove members of the House and Senate is by expulsion.

The last U.S. House expulsion was in 2002. It was James “Beam me up” Traficant.

Expulsion probably won’t happen, so it’s up to the voters in his district to vote him out.

Note: In researching this commentary, I found that Representative King seems to enjoy meeting with his constituents face to face. He lists all his Town Hall meetings for 2019, up to a week before they are to be held. There are 46 of them scheduled.

GREENLAND:

The Wall Street Journal reported that President Donald Trump eyes a new real estate purchase: Greenland. In conversations with aides, the president has—with varying degrees of seriousness—floated the idea of the U.S. buying the autonomous Danish territory.

Then Twitter went wild. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Can Trump even find Greenland on a map?
  • If Donald Trump thinks Greenland is for sale, I can’t wait to see what he does with the next email he gets from a Nigerian spammer.
  • Greenland. This is what happens when Melania asks her husband to buy some Danish.
  • Spent the day in Yosemite and I heard at least a dozen languages and I just assume now they were all saying, “Greenland, wtf?”
  • Buying Greenland is easily the most exciting idea I’ve heard since the Space Force.
  • Make Greenland Great Again!

ONE MORE THING:

As I was starting this column late Thursday evening, I went to my Sirius/XM app on my phone and selected the Classic Rewind station. The first song was “Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osbourne.

I think that about sums up the first couple of years of the Trump Presidency.

So tell me the title of a song that you believe describes the first couple years of the Trump Presidency. Put it in the comment section (below) or send it to me via email at Western_Word@Yahoo.com.

Have a wonderful weekend, and thanks for reading!
