Welcome to the big column to end the week “Caught My Eye” (CME)!
If you are a first-time visitor, welcome! CME is the once a week column that is posted here every Friday morning. This is when I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week. There may be some sarcasm and pointed independent commentary so be warned!
Here are the topics that “Caught My Eye” this week:
- Montana Sales Tax
- Daylight Saving Time
- Straws and Plastic Bags
- The Daines Tweet
- Elizabeth Warren
- One More Thing
Montana Sales Tax:
Every two years the crazies come out in the Montana Legislature and try to pass bills that don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of passing. Somewhere in the state capitol, there must be a silly fountain where these crazies drink the Kool-Aid and act like they are big shots.
A 426-page bill that would cut some property taxes, create a statewide sales taxes and shutter Department of Revenue offices in Montana counties was heard Wednesday by a state panel in which some opponents said there should be a discussion on Montana’s tax structure instead. The bill is House Bill 300 by Rep. Kerry White, R-Bozeman. (GF Tribune)
I thought Republicans were against raising taxes? Remember this is the same Republican Party that their leader in the state senate (Scott Sales) wants to raise their pay by a whopping 69%. No wonder they want to raise taxes.
There’s a Change.org petition that I signed and you should sign to let the Montana Legislature know that you are against a sales tax in Montana. Check it out by clicking HERE.
Daylight Saving Time:
Applause to the members of the State Administration Committee who voted this week to kill a bill that would have asked Montana voters whether they want to end daylight-saving time in the state. (MTN News)
Shame on Republican State Senator, John Esp, for wasting our time by introducing the bill.
Straws and Plastic Bags:
Two bills introduced in the Montana Legislature by Democratic State Senator Sue Malek would limit plastic straws in retail food establishments and would charge for plastic bags in stores are dead according to a couple posts on Twitter from Mike Dennison of MTN News. (@mikedennison)
The bills are SB 120 and SB 121.
This is another case of bills being introduced that wastes time. If I don’t want to use a plastic bag or a straw I won’t. I don’t need the government to tell me that.
Shame on Democratic State Senator Sue Malek for wasting our time by introducing these bills.
The Daines Tweet:
It’s never too hard to figure out our junior U.S. Senator here in Montana. Steve Daines is a publicity hound and that appears to be the first thing on his mind from morning until night.
He also loves Donald Trump. If Trump make a sudden stop, Daines will be so far up (ok, you get the picture)
After the State of the Union, Daines posted this tweet:
“It looked like there are two countries represented at last night’s SOTU — the United States and Venezuela.” – @SteveDaines
I’m not sure if Daines was referring to some of the people dressed in white or that there were not enough white people, like him, in the room. Maybe it was something else – like the turmoil in Venezuela.
So I replied and asked, “Why Senator – not as white as you would like?”
I have yet to receive a response.
There are around 195 comments about his tweet – most were not favorable.
It’s getting old hearing U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) apologize for trying to claim Native American heritage.
This week it was discovered that she had listed (in her own handwriting) “American Indian” on a 1986 registration card for the State Bar of Texas.
Warren plans to make an announcement about her presidential plans this weekend. I suggest she announce that she is staying in the Senate and not running for President.
Donald Trump has crippled her with his racist “Pocahontas” remarks. He will destroy her if she is the Democratic nominee.
One More Thing:
I never thought Canadians had much of a sense of humor…
Yahoo News reported:
A Canadian man says that his request for a personalized license plate has been rejected on the grounds that it contains an “unacceptable slogan.”
The CBC reports that Dave Assman, who pronounces his last name as “Oss-men,” has been prohibited from putting his last name on his license plate — and he’s determined to fight the ban.
Seinfeld’s Cosmo Kramer dealt with the same issue – check THIS OUT.
