Hopefully the President is just blowing off steam again, but if he’s even half-serious, this is nuts. – U.S. Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE) about the President’s trade war.
Welcome to the big show to end the week “Caught My Eye” (CME)!
If you are a first-time visitor, CME is posted right here every Friday morning. This is when I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week. I often throw in a touch of sarcasm to make you smile – or to irritate you just a little – maybe both.
Topics that I am providing commentary about today include the National Guard, Steve Bullock, Montana’s GOP Senate candidates, Trump & Stormy, Trump’s Trade War, and One More Thing!
President Donald Trump wants to send 2000-4000 National Guard members to the southern border to help fight illegal immigration and drug trafficking. He says they might be there until the wall is in place.
It’s been done before – most recently by Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
The Associated Press reported that Montana Governor Steve Bullock says he’ll never deploy National Guard troops “based simply on the whim of the President’s morning Twitter habit.”
I think what we will find is Democrat Governors, like Bullock, saying no and Republican Governors saying yes.
I was hoping the President might want to use the Guard to help out the folks in Puerto Rico who are still struggling.
Montana’s GOP Senate Field:
In case you missed it, MTN News’ Mike Dennison took a look at four Republican U.S. Senate candidates this week: Troy Downing, Russell Fagg, Al Olszewski and Matt Rosendale.
Watch/read the story HERE.
From my experience, I’m sure that at least a couple of the candidates already know they won’t win the primary. They know the endorsements aren’t coming, the money is not flowing, and the crowds are sparse at the campaign stops.
It’s the same thing for some of the six Democrats running in the U.S. House primary.
Trump – I Know Nothing:
Reuters and others sources reported that U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday he did not know about a $130,000 payment made by his lawyer to actress Stormy Daniels to keep her quiet.
Daniels’ attorney, Michael Avenatti, said Trump’s admission that he did not know about the payment helps his client.
The whole Stormy Daniels issue is interesting, but hearing Trump sound like Sergeant Schultz from “Hogan’s Heroes” is priceless.
Trump’s Trade War:
Hopefully the President is just blowing off steam again, but if he’s even half-serious, this is nuts. – U.S. Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE)
That was the comments made by Sasse after hearing that President Trump was considering slapping tariffs on an additional $100 billion in Chinese goods. (NY Times)
Trump’s trade war may harm the very people who strongly supported him in the last election – those in rural areas – the farmers and ranchers.
One More Thing:
