The Sunday Message

I wrote this column in November 2015, and I thought I would share it again. Enjoy!

Oh Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree,
You’ll ever be unchanging!
A symbol of goodwill and love
You’ll ever be unchanging

Each shining light
Each silver bell
No one alive spreads cheer so well

Oh Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree,
You’ll ever be unchanging

– O Christmas Tree Lyrics | MetroLyrics

When my children were younger we would plan on heading into the Lewis and Clark National Forest with some friends around the first weekend in December to find the perfect Christmas tree. We would buy a tag from the Forest Service, load up the SUV, and head for the wilderness.

We would also bring plenty of food. We’d start a fire and enjoy the fresh air. We would spend the day in search of the perfect tree. I don’t know if we ever found it, but the kids had a blast playing in the snow that was sometimes very deep. They were normally worn out and sleeping before we made it back to the highway to head home with a tree strapped to the top of the vehicle.

Some years the “hunt” went smoothly; others years it was more of an adventure. We would always bring a tow rope and once or twice we got stuck, but it still counted as a great time!

The Great Falls Tribune has a story posted on their website about finding the perfect tree. Check it out HERE.

If you live near a place where you can “hunt” for your own Christmas tree, do it. The memories will last forever.
